Is there a difference between transferring domain name to new owner & changing domain owner details?

Hello,
I am looking to give one of the domains that I currently own to my friend who currently lives in Canada. So for me to do the needful, should I transfer the domain name to him or change the domain owner details (and I am not even clear if they both are the same).

Basically, I want to make sure that once I give the domain to him, he is on his own and I am not held accountable for any support/customer service/legal issues.

Kindly help.

Thanks
Dan

Yes. Changing domain WHOIS data can be done from your account an dbe updated in seconds. Changing OWNERSHIP/TRANSFER your domain to another account takes some time as you need to contact the domain company and request a release code, which the other party needs to transfer the domain to their account.

Thanks for the reply Nick. So would just changing the WHOIS data exclude me from being held accountable for customer service/support/legal issues?

      What customer service/support/legal issues?

Anyway, if the domain is still in your account. You still control/own it.

Just have your friend start a transfer request and be done with it.
Or, see if your registrar allows free pushes into another account with them. Then have your friend open an account there and push the domain into his account.
