From a Flippa email:

Retweet.com Sold for $250,000

Retweet.com, listed for sale on Flippa.com last month, has just sold for $250,000. The successful buyer knocked out other interested parties with a Buy It Now offer $48,000 higher than any other bid.

A competitor to Tweetmeme, Retweet finds the most retweeted stories on Twitter while also providing online publishers with the ability to easily add a Retweet button to their website.

Check out the auction here...

That would be a nice pay day! Especially when you consider that they weren't actually earning any money from the site. I'd say they made out pretty well.

There was a ton of technology behind that site though. It's not like their investment was nil. But still its a great payday I'm sure.

I was watching that auction...finger on the trigger. /lies

Would be interesting to see if this sale goes through especially since the term "retweet" has a patent pending on it, could be major TM issues unless of course the buyer of this domain name is Twitter itself!.

I was thinking this myself, but there's one thing that I've noticed ... Twitter has been grossly negligent in protecting it's trademarks. I haven't checked to see if they got Tweet, but many websites registered Tweet sites before they applied for Tweet and many websites have Twitter in the domain names and go unchallenged. In order to keep a trademark, you must defend a trademark.

Wasn't this discussed on the auction thread? I thought the owner said Twitter already lost for tweet, so he expected they would lose for retweet too, since its a term made up by their community, not by them. Something like that...

That's good to know. Haven't had time to read the thread yet, but I own TweetBlogging.com and would like to keep it

You would think an investment of $250K would include a Trademark clarification along with a Legal Opinion Letter from an IP atty who knows their way around.

Otherwise they are blindly leaving the door open for future litigation. Stranger things have happened, not the least of which is cybersquatters making a killing.

    Nice!

This high-dollar auction is great for everyone:

    1. The seller of course gets to pocket the cash.

    2. The buyer is getting all this free publicity, so no doubt he or she is getting a few visitors checking out the site.

    3. And Flippa is also getting some nice publicity.

Very cool. I hope the transaction goes through without a hitch.

I went to the auction and grabbed the response by the owner...

elitweb, there are no trademark issues with retweet.
You can find the Twitter and Mesiab Labs ( our company ) Retweet trademarks by going to the TESS database here: TESS -- Error and searching Retweet
Twitter and Mesiab Labs can both be granted their trademarks for Retweet as they are claiming different uses. Retweet.com trademark filing here: TESS -- Error
Although It is most likely that the trademark office will deny both trademarks as they have already denied twitters attempt to trademark 'tweet' .
If the trademark filing is granted, it will be transferred to the new buyer.

Hopefully the buyer got some form of specific indemnity or other protection on the Trademark issue. For that kind of money, I wouldn't want to only rely on standard terms.
