How likely is a drop in google from a redesign?

Hi all,

I need some advice.

My site is ranked No.1 for lots of the terms i want.

I got 3,400,000 unique visitors last month.

But my CTR in adsense is VERY LOW (i do not think i can say what it is)

I'm thinking about redesigning my site - But am worried about dropping in the rankings for the terms that have taken me so long to rank for.

Please could someone give me some advice on if i should just leave it, or is there ways to create a better design and not budge in the rankings?

Is there anyway to get professional advice about these things? (maybe even contact google some way?)

I was ranked #2 for "save marriage" until I changed promotions. Updating/changing the presell copy was enough to drop my site WAY down the list. I still rank for the terms I've been targeting and the bigger term was just a very nice bonus.

If all you're changing is layout, it won't cause any problems.

If you're keeping the content the same, I wouldn't think it would affect your ranking.

If you site is designed with a clear separation of design and content, you should not see any difference in ranking.

I'll be keeping the pages in the same place - same /page-name.htm
But i think i could be adding more text to each page - so it could change the keyword phrase count.

The layout would also be totally different.

Thanks so much guys. Kelly - sorry about you losing your keyword position, it really helps me to see that that my worries are justified.

Palusko - the site was made back in 07 or something, and very little has been done. The new site would be totally separation of design and content. But the current one is tables not css

Any changes could lead to a drop, this is quite common but usually temporary.

Some sites disappear for a few days after some changes but bounce back.

I've had this happen many times but for terms that I rank number 1 I have to make major changes to drop down or out.

I've lost traction before after only switching themes. I do think you could perhaps alter the position of your adsense blocks without angering Big G.
