Getting Someone To Promote For You - Don't Do This

I receive e-mails along these lines and I decided that today's would be shared to help newer marketers get others to promote for them.

Note: I'm not posting this e-mail to embarrass the writer, but to educate, so if this is your e-mail, please do not be offended. Name is withheld.

I know you 're busy so I keep this brief. Basically, I recently stumbled across your web siteand as I was readingyour websiteit suddenly occurred to me that you might just be interested in generating some extra revenue from your customer list.

In short, I wondered if you would like to increase the revenue you get from your customer list by joint marketing a great product of mine. I'll be honest, I don't yet have a list to trade with you, so you'll get the lion's share of the proceeds from this.

Let me know if this interests you and I'll send you all the details and a free copy of the product for you to review, keep and use for your own benefit.

Whatever you decide I wish you all the very best.
The writer has a "great product" for me to promote. The problem is, so does every other person who sends me this kind of e-mail. Funnily enough, not one has ever said "I have a mediochre product and thought that maybe, if you had nothing better to do, you could promote it a bit".

Not a single hint as to what the product is. I don't promote just anything to my members. It has to be something that I feel will help at least a number of them. Since I'm busy and booked up, I turned this person down with a polite reply. However, if they had given some details - and it turned out to be something that could be quite good for my members - I would have asked for more info and taken up the offer for a review copy.

Moral: Sell your product, not just the op to make commissions. Every vendor is giving commissions. Myself - and I know many fellow marketers are the same - I'm looking for a good, fitting product (something that fills a gap or works well with my own products).

    Exactly.

Great post Kevin. I'm amazed with how many 'potential' partners approach thinking it's all about the money - when it's not.

It's about providing quality to your customers and giving them what they need, rather than what a stranger thinks they should buy.

Keep the person you are sending in mind, if they are successful, they are likely looking not just at money, but a lot more

      Kevin,

That was obviously written by a hamster who thought you would make a great JV partner.

Other than that, you make a great point. Oh, the opportunities we miss.

P.S. I'll try to do it better next time...

      Kevin,

I hear you brother. It would have been helpful if you knew what the product was. My best and most profitable promotions (JVs) have come from:

      * Building relationships
      * Attraction

When you have a kick*** product or service, a solid reputation in your industry, have great service, then people are going to come to you with offers and JV requests. Some people hardly put any effort into building relationships and in shows in their first contact.

It reminds me of a post I made a couple years ago:

    Too true.

I have to wonder if that is the same approach they take in their marketing and list building efforts.

"I have this great product...so give me your money."

Getting JVs is still about selling value and solutions, money comes as a by-product.

At least he or she had enough sense to offer you a review copy. I lot of the "offers" I get don't even do that.

Another lesson for would-be marketers, if you want people to believe you have a great product, don't send an email riddled with typos.

I would have at least asked him what his product is... then let him tell me more about it. Takes no time to read what it might be in the 2nd email.

But duhhh... this person should have sent the product information in the first email. Unbelievable that this person wouldn't think that would be important in the first email!

Exactly Dennis - how would anyone believe you have a "Great Product" if you send an email full of errors and typo's??

You won't once you start getting a lot of e-mails like this.

It's all about respecting your prospect's time. There is nothing in this e-mail that makes me want to use my precious time to send for more information. If there was even a one-sentence description of the product - and it looked like something that could be a fit - I'd be more likely to ask for more info.

        Kevin,

I received the exact same email and unfortunately for the party that wrote it, I have the same opinion as you.

There is absolutely nothing to indicate whether or not it would fit in with any of my niches and nothing to evaluate.

Okay, there is the offer of a review copy, but I have enough cluttering up my hard drive as it is.

    Kevin,

I know you are busy so I will keep this brief .

I have a product that you can pimp out to your list .

While I have had little success in selling this myself , I sold enough to show you some stats .

4 sales and only 3 refunds

I know you should get the bulk of the profits ... I was thinking 51% but could go up to 53% if you could prove conversions on your end prior to mailing .

I am not picky when it comes to the day that you mail. Any Tuesday will be fine .

    Thanks in advance

    Troy Phillips

PS: I can supply a review copy at a discount if you are interested

I think that was a generic email template that have just copied from some JV guide book to copy/paste and send to list owners.

Wow--that e-mail looks like the person wrote a bunch of rough draft introductory paragraphs, got distracted by something shiny and hit send. Yowza.

By sending that out, the guy is costing himself more in sales than he would have made if he had taken some time to, at the very least, proofread his message.

Hey Kevin, since you've got 5 minutes to spare, I have an underperforming website I set up 3 years ago. Haven't had time to do much to it (well, anything really). I'm sure you could make some money if you promote it for a few months. 5% commission up to 1,000 sales then it jumps to 10%.

No? Ah well, it was worth a shot. Now to the next marketer on my list of names...

Actually, the funniest approach I saw like that was someone trying to get Jon Leger to promote one of his own products to his own list, heavily discounted, with the emailer taking the full commission from the sale.

    Why?

Because "as a suggestion it was bound to increase Jon's sales."

I think the reply was no, but I can't be sure...

I get about 3 of these a week sometimes, all in the same format so i took to asking the people sending them what what the score was and it's a course some bozo sells.

I actually had a long email conversation with some of the people and pointed them in the right direction. in fact i got 2 members from it

here is one of the replies i sent and the follow up (btw they don't have a new product just a set of products supplied)

name removed to protect the delusional!

As i told the other 20 or 30 people who sent out exactly the same email, if you can't be bothered to change the text and at least give me or other marketers a clue as to what product (out of the selection that you get from Richard Clarke) you are selling you probably won't get a reply!!

Create your own great product give marketers details and if it's good they'll promote it. But don't expect us to waste time on some product that 20 or 30 people have already emailed us about.

      REply....

Thanks for your reply. Let me firstly apologize for the same 'template email' your getting. Must be very annoying. Anyway, I guess you know who Richard Clarke is. He has been teaching people how to find email addresses and then write a certain letter to them which will get ( or should) a reply and then JV with you. Are all Richard Clarke's products a load of rubbish? He also claims that a 57 year old lady called Dorothy Burns has made between £6k to £5k in the last couple of months. Is this Richard Clarke a scam artist? Sorry about asking these questions. I am a relative newbie in internet marketing and just wondered if you could point me in right direction in regards to product creation, website building etc. Your help is very much appreciated.

      Thanks!

Not only is that approach extremely ineffective, but the email flat out sucks.

Then they'll come in here crying that they can't get anyone to promote their product.

Getting people to do what you want takes a lot more tact than just jumping the gun
and asking them for a promo, especially when you never met them.

LOL - i've actually split tested sweaty vs not sweaty

sweaty outdid not sweat by a factor of 2 to 1

However, if you splash some Drakkar cologne on the non-sweaty guys, it almost evened out.

Look I hav ethis product right, and it's amazing, will it will be, I just been too busy to finish it ok. But when I do wow Frank Kern will want this for his list but no way will he get it.

Obviously, I don't know you so I dont whether to trust you yet so why not give me your list and I'll send the product to them and then send you your share. Think of it easy money and you dont have to so a thing!

So I'll keep 75% cos its my product and all you have to do is send a list by email - maybe you should send me a bonus to add to my offer to sweeten the deal.

    Sound ok?

let me know quick as others are trying to do this with me and I cant hold them off much longer.

As you can see, the email has no numbers. If you approach someone and ask them to promote your product, show me some numbers. What is the conversation rate? How much is the product? How much is the commission rate etc?

In all seriousness, Kevin is a very nice man just to answer the email. The word on the street is this. If you don't send some numbers with the request most Marketers will just delete the email and move on.

The thing is, you just learned a good lesson that you can take with you to bank, if you use it correctly.

Great post man... I get emails similar to this a lot, and I am already booked as it is. But if someone provides me with why their product will absolutey kill it because it's different in "these ways", then I will try to partner up with them for a launch.

But I like the idea of standing out, even with JV's... as you said, you arent really selling the customers so much(that part is pretty much done), but rather the JV's behind the launch.

    Thanks for the insight man..

I see a lot of great comments, but I think some are a bit harsh. Obviously, before anyone hooks up with another in a JV deal he needs to explore the deal in depth. That includes taking a good look at the other's product he will be promoting as well as the financial agreements in the JV. To be critical of someone's initial proposal without looking at what he really has to offer seems to me to premature. If you receive a JV offer, and you might be interested, take a thorough look at the product and its promotional materials and if you like it all, negotiate a fair deal if you can. If you can't, all you have wasted is some of your time.

This is the type of people who look for shortcuts to earn some quick buck and probably thinks he is helping someone else make some money too. I am appalled at some methods people resort to or add on to the myths that making money in IM is so easy.

Looks like this guy wrote an email thinking that you are a complete newbie who has no idea about making money online.

Dude, cmon now and at least space between the words. It's a business proposal and not a sorry note to your girlfriend telling her why you weren't able to make it to the dinner tomorrow.
