I'm baffled! Since backlinks are so important why don't we ALL buy good used domains?

I feel like I really missed out by buying new domains all this time!

...I could buy a brand new domain and then build keyword backlinks OR i could buy a used $5 domain from GoDaddy that has tons of (good - yes, i look at them first) backlinks and then add additional my own keyword backlinks.

As far as i can see, the only difference is that a new domain would have my keywords in the domain.... otherwise are we not all better off starting with some exisiting backlinks??

ACK! So much wasted time!

Backlinks are king, but having the keyword in the domain name weighs a lot too. Unless you're trying to brand yourself, it's almost the best option if you can register the keyword-domain.

I still think that the help of starting out with 600+ backlinks outweighs the help of having keywords in a new domain name.

I keep wondering if buying used domains is something that lots of people are doing... they're just being quiet about it

        Thoughts? For or against?

I Think you are right. A lot of people are doing it but not speaking about it.

One of the courses by the guys that did commissionblueprint did go into detail on this very topic (can't remember which course it was since I have a few of their courses, but it was about 8 months ago and the course wasn't cheap, but it covered loads, this was just one of the topics); however, it still isn't something I personally have got round to doing yet.

Thanks for reminding me about it.

I will be buying some established domains and doing some testing over the coming months. I am sure you will probably be doing the same.

The truth is that the only way to really know if these things work is when you test them for yourself. You will always get loads of different people with different opinions on it, but very few of them, I mean very few, have actually done any serious testing themselves.

          Good luck.

I know of someone who is experimenting with buying established PR 4-5 websites and using them for backlinks. Depending on the cost, it might be cheaper to buy such a site than to, say, buy enough profile backlinks to boost a Web 2.0 page that high.

Actually that practice has been around awhile and works pretty good sometimes. Just bear in mind that some sites have been marked by google in the past for spam and misbehaving and can have a pile of backlinks and never appear in the index - never will either until you request for a review.

Second you give up alot in branding by picking some other domain name with off niche keywords.

You can find them for five dollars? More power to you. Usually the good ones go for more. For expired domains watch it as sometimes by the time you get it registered and up and running some of the links might have fallen off as broken links.

I listened/read somewhere, maybe SEOMoz that this is a fallacy. Google does not pass on the juice from expired domains (or that's the new speculation). They would still be backlinks, but would not help with SERPS. I'm not sure I believe that entirely. It depends though...75 days does give Google enough time to catch on that a domain has expired, not to mention the new whois info...

If you are talking about dropped or expired domains, then generally all the backlinks and PageRank is lost/devalued once the domain is dropped and that may not be visible until the next PR update.

And if you are talking about existing non dropped domains, then there are already many services that you can use to find these domains, but for any decent one, there will be lot of buyers and the domains will be sold auction style so you won't be able to get quality domains for cheap. And most importantly if you put content on the site that was not related to the original content on the page, Google can not only detect that but may even apply a penalty.

    3 Issues ...

#1 - The backlinks will be no longer any good once the site is taken down and the domain slapped up for sale. Some backlinks do remain but most will go...

#2 - You have no idea what kind of business that domain was running, was it legit ? did they rip off people ? did they run a scam site ? Because if they did then you would bear that on your site as people that was scammed would still be talking about it no matter if it has a new owner or not.

#3 - Never, Ever, Ever deal with ScamDaddy... They have stolen more domain names than I care to count...

Just curious why someone would give up a domain with 500 backlinks without selling it?
