How Much Can I Sell My Website For?

Hey Warriors,

I was trying to find a thread on the subject of website selling, but unfortunately I wasn't able to find anything. If there is another thread for this I apologize.

I was interested in selling one of my sites, but didn't really know how about going about it.

Where can I sell it? I've heard of Flippa and I know there is a section on this forum

How much is a good asking price? Should this be based on monthly revenues?

If there is a subscriber list, can that be sold as well?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thx

Sid

Go to flippa.com and check the pricing on the related websites of yours.
    Most website flippers use flippa.com.

It is almost silly to say, but it is worth what someone will pay for it.

All you need is one motivated buyer for your niche, if your site is #1 ranked for wrestling then selling to a bunch of IM experts at flippa may not be the right option, but you might list it on eBay and find a WWE fanatic willing to pay 10k for it, it really all just depends...

The buying and selling website arena has changed so much with Flippa's rise.

Back in 2005 through to as recently as 2008/2009 it was recommended to NOT identify your niche topic etc, until you'd gone through to deposit stage.

Also then it was done very much on X times the YEARLY profit (a broker I worked with actually based it on revenue) - not monthly.

And then the multiple would depend on how the deal was structured. With a lump sum being the least number of multiples. You could structure it in ways similar to when you buy/sell properties or real world businesses.

With Flippa it has been more about bidding up to a reserve (or no reserve) and/or a buy it now price.

And it's all out in the open - you know what the niche is instantly.

As far as value - the comments made are spot on - it really is about how much people are willing to pay for it.

And factors on what makes a site more attractive include Unique Traffic, PR, Domain Age, Position in the SERPS, Revenue & Profit and the ratio between the two.

A PPC business model is quite different to a SEO business model. And will attract a different type of buyer/price potentially.

And then it's about whether it's one main website, or whether there's a whole business with say website, membership program, blog, mailing list, SEO & PPC etc etc.

I think the best thing to do is to take a good look around Flippa for sites/businesses similarly structured and aged as your own. And see what it is going for. That might be a good start.

I also think how you construct your 'sales page' for the sale is key too. It is good to be as transparent as possible, and to be as actively involved as possible in answering questions.

I recently sold a business on Flippa for 2.5 X the yearly profit. I was happy with the result - I did put a lot of time and energy into preparing everything for the sale, and did a lot of research. So there was a lot of work my end and it paid off. More work than I ever put into the business truth told (hence the reason for selling).

I've noticed that more high end businesses are being sold too now on Flippa - as before it seemed to be more modest prices. So that is worth watching too.

I totally commend Flippa - they have an awesome system/set up.

    Best

    Caro :-)

Another vote for Flippa....that's where the buyers hang. As far as what you can sell it for...likely 10 to 12 times monthly profit.

The actual selling price usually hinges on just what kind of website it is - where does the income come from?

Some sites are short term money spinners that will peak at the start, and then drop off to next to nothing for the rest of it's short shelf life.

Other sites will show steady growth.

Sites with a downwards profit trend may sell from anywehre between three months to 12 months worth of income.

Sites with steady growth can sell up to around three times the amount of yearly income.

So it really depends on where the money is coming from, and how sustainable it is, and what projected future growth is like.

    cheers

      Exactly Sam!

I don't think some of the people that are just starting out either buying or selling sites realize the difference between short term money makers, and long term. This makes a hugh difference in buying price or whether it sells at all.

I would suggest you to sell on Ebay, Flippa, upname. Depends on what is your niche. Find according to your niche, what price the same age domains are selling out.

Go with this info. It really tells you what to do to determine a price

Subscriber list can't be sold unless you transfer the whole email marketing account to him

Great thread - this was EXACTLY what I needed to read. Weird because I just started looking for buyers for my Health / Dating site today, but had no idea where to start. Fate seems to keep pointing me towards selling it!!

Not So New: You could also try the forums at Digital Point for selling your site. I have no idea "how good" it is for selling because I've never sold a site there before. They don't charge for advertising your site like other sites do though.

I valued mine according to its most profitable month, and also against the potential it has to make income after a little love and care from someone with more time to work on it.

I think AdZaz nailed it right when he said it's worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it, though!

Hey there. You can sell your website at Flippa for most of the people interested in buying sites are there.

The usual beginning bid price usually range from x6 months or x10 months of your monthly revenue. From there, people will evaluate your website depending on your niche, domain and even the overall profitability of the site to them. What really matters is that the site has revenue.

As for me, I also look at backlinks. I want to see if they are intact and will not disappear after some time. Traffic is also a factor for people want to know what other monetization methods can they use on the site.

But the bottomline is that the site must be profitable.

More profitable = higher selling value

    This is the formula:

The price of the website = 5 X monthly revenue

Flippa is my weapon of choice also, but don't forget your fellow warriors. You can list a site on here too

As blue_tiger says, your site value is usually determined by revenue x 5, but I (and others in the flipping business) sell at 10 x revenue too. When selling businesses in the real world, you can sell based on 10 x projected, and similarly with online businesses. I sold a site that made £1.48 in two months for $110. It really does depend on your market reach, ranking and more importantly - who visits the listing itself... there could be a guy sat out there just waiting for a site in your niche.

As long as your site is profitable and you can prove it, you will get somebody willing to take it off your hands, only if it means more long term profit for them.

So if your site is making 30K a year, then selling it for a quick 25K would be ideal.

Not only will the buyer make their money back the first year, but they will have a business to continue making money with as the years pass by.

Usually residual services or monthly subscription websites are qualified for long term customer based relationships.
