How do you build a viral site while not in the IM niche?

Hey warriors,

I have a bit of a problem here. I am about to build my very first free membership site. This comes from following Mike Filsaime's butterfly marketing techniques.

His theory's rely on what is called the viral factor or Vx, and the main way he makes his sites viral is to make it super easy to promote it as an affiliate, by giving tons of tools etc. So people promote a free membership site and then they make money on the OTO or the back end.

My problem is that I am in the personal finance niche. My target market does not know internet marketing that well and would probably not know how to do any of the marketing. As my friend would say, they would probably make an IM newbie look like a guru.

My question is what do I do then? I have a product and I need a platform to sell it from. I am building my list but I know that the key to generating passive sales is to have JV partners and affiliates promoting our products.

I feel kinda stuck.

    So the only way this will work is through affiliate promotions? Why can't you do other ways to promote the site yourself. Remember this is not a 1 trick pony here, you can find many ways to get traffic to your site. I understand what you are saying with his business model but don't limit yourself to just that.

    I'm sure you are a smart guy so why not think of better ways to target that specific market? It sounds like you have a good site here, why not advertise on relevant blogs or niche sites? You could also look at JV's with others in the finance market? I hope it does really well for you.

      Thanks for the advice. We are just getting ready to work on this site, I guess what I am trying to figure out is should I continue with this site......

        A lot of people that aren't in the IM niche have NO clue about affiliate marketing, in fact they don't even know what affiliate means. However they do understand "Tell a Friend".
        If you set up your site in such a way that after they have been through the up sell process, whether they buy or not, you put up a "referral box" with maybe 3 slots for names and email addresses and then explain that if they tell their friends about the site then their upgraded membership would be free if their friends upgrade as well and in fact if they refer more than x members they would actually make a passive income as well. You would set up an email that would automatically go out to the referrals and you could even show them what it would look like so they feel comfortable giving their friends email information.

        i think this may even be explained in the BFM manual
