I Want to Quit My JOB & Start My Business

Hey Guys,

I realized the other day, that I've been running around making another job, and am way too involved in everything my "company" has going on.

Sure I have a few employees, and sure it makes some money, and sure it can do some of it on autopilot.

But, it's not even close to what my initial idea was.

I've tested out a variety of monetization methods, promotion methods, lead capture systems, tracking, traffic and become pretty good at them, but there's NO unified concept (hedgehog concept) around them.

So, I had read Good to Great, and Built to Last a few months ago, and really was struck with how much potential these companies tap into. How their entire industry can be stagnant, and these teams can beat the market by at least 7 times.

That being said, I'm looking to get my hands on a couple of high quality, business organization systems. Stuff comparable to Eban Pagan's Get Altitude and Rich Schefren's Business Growth System.

I think I might purchase the Business Growth System, but I'd really like to see what else is out there before I dive in.

Thanks in advance.

I'm sure there are plenty of books in the library or Amazon that deal with that topic.

Another avenue you could consider is getting a coach who specializes in this area.

I know all too well about trying to do everything in your business.

Loved Good To Great...but unfortunately that is as far as I can comment.

I certainly understand what you are talking about. Good luck, I'll like to see what suggestions come up.

Yeah it was a solid book

I've looked at a couple of books (E Myth, E Myth Mastery, Good to Great), but maybe I will have to get a coach. I wonder if Jay Abraham has anything for business development, or if he focuses more on marketing...

Jay Abraham, Dan Kennedy, Bill Glazer, Dave Lakhani, and (shameless promo my new book below-lol) and many more are great. Just make sure you learn from people who are doing what they are talking about and make sure you take action immediately.

Have you read the 4-hour work week by Timothy Ferris? It's simply brilliant, actually i found the audio version somewhere online (an 8 hour mp3..) maybe not exactly a system that you are looking for, but it makes a ton of sense for someone in your position, he went from working round the clock in his $70k a month business to only working on it not in it and enjoying life...and his profits actually skyrocketed...

        recommended highly for warriors!

@bente, seriously? Trying to build some backlinks?

Yep I've read the 4 Hour Work Week. It's definitely good, but I'd love to get my hands on something more specific.

I'm thinking a business coach might be the best idea. Will update if I find anything good.

Lance, try to use local resources. Some cities have mentor programs sponsered by the local chamber of commerce or economic development commission. I've learned more about business from old school business owners than anywhere.

    E-Myth is good.
    Must Have Customers
    Monopoly Rules
    Ready, Fire Aim
    4 Hour Work week

I would highly recommend reading as much as you can on businesses that were built around a system (McDonalds for example) and finding a local mentor then just start building a business that you know can be automated or systemized quickly.

I've built many businesses but the only one that I truly see as a systemized business is online marketing. I know that every action I take is "building the pipeline".

I was actually a business analyst before and can tell you the mentality and skills you learn in that job is EXACTLY what you need. There is not one jobs in any organization that cannot be automated with the right amount of analysis of the business rules and processes.

I have no agenda but to help those in the same situation. This I feel will pay the bills.

Great food for thought there John. I hadn't even considered checking with my local SBA chapter, or trying to get in touch with business owners around here.

The thing that really struck me about your post was the business analyst tip. I think I'm going to try to start building as best I can, get a mentor, and read up on business analysis so I can get better at making critical decisions.

Ready, Fire, Aim & The Four Hour Workweek are two of my favorites. I need to read E-myth Mastery all the way through, but parts don't apply.

    Edit:
Steve, that's one big thing I realized a couple of months ago when I hired a girl to train as a manager, and started letting go of stuff.

Fortunately, I've always known two things.

    1. There are people way smarter than me.
    2. There are going to be people way better than me at certain things.

So, I'm trying to find people that have the same values, are smarter than me, and are better than me at the things I need done. The way I figure, if I'm needed, I haven't built an effective company.

    Thanks for the solid advice.

@Rick, You've got just the kind of knowledge I'm looking for Rick! I signed up for your list, but do you offer any consulting? Right now I've got a few hardcore process development text books on hand to get the ball rolling, and am going to throw laser-targeted mud at the wall until I can grab a local mentor.

@wisegirl, I'm not planning on quiting everything. Actually am looking at a commission based sales job to get the ball rolling.
