I am actually excited to see the result of this post. I have been wanting a custom symbol on a few of my sites also.

The symbol will be saved on the server as a name.jpg or name.gif all you have to do is replace that image with one of your own by uploading your own image that you have given the same name to.

For example: if your host's symbol is called symbol.gif then create your own symbol and call it symbol.gif - when you go to upload it using your FTP you will be asked if you want to overwrite this file, say yes and your symbol will replace your host's symbol.

Are the symbols you are referring to the site's FavIcon? For HostMonster it would be the joined *hm*

In other works, it is the symbol that appears in the web site address bar and is also shown beside any bookmarks...

Here at the WF, is it is the tiny black WF over the red triangle...

If you ARE referring to the Favicon, you'll need to replace that file with another .ico file and be sure that it is named favicon.ico

Here is a great site for creating FavICons (I am a design geek and incapable of creating a website that doesn't have an appropriate FavIcon LOL)

        Dynamic Drive- FavIcon Generator

Note that a favicon.ico is NOT just a graphics file given that name... You need to create a real Favicon.ico file and use it.

It MUST be called -- favicon.ico

It also must be saved in the proper place. For example, in HG sites the favicon.ico lives directly in the public_html directory/folder
