Learn Inside Secrets of Google Local Listings

I need to learn the real skinny on how to get top positions in Google's Local Business listings (Google Maps). I am fairly proficient in getting first page listings in the organic listings but don't have a clue about what techniques are employed with the Local/Maps listings as many don't even have websites ???

I am expecting to pay for this consulting/information

      I don't mind paying for good solid consulting but free is acceptable- lol

      All I know is that there are many catagoties in large cities that have 1000's of companies listed and like normal SEO, only the first 10 really count and are ever seen

      I have spent many hours reviewing many catagories and can not determine any pattern of what it takes to be in that first 10 for a page one listing

      Some have reviews - some don't, some have webpages - some don't, some have 3rd party sources(superpages, yelp etc)-some don't

      There must be some optimization factors that I'm not seeing and I'm not trying to answer my own question but will share the most definitive information that I have found:

          Thanks Steve - but then how do you explain the huge number of instances where companies with no website and no backlinks are displayed above other companies that have a fair number of both?
