Buying 'about to expire' domains? backordering domains?

Hey,

Ok i found the perfect domain for my next business venture and checked the whois and it has been owned since 2004 but expires on the 16th march this year (few day's away).

Now i have a few options as it seems it's had nothing on it for a long time and yet keeps being renewed!

1 - contact the owner and ask them to sell it to me!

2 - backorder the domain name for $20 with godaddy (i hate them but only one that seems to offer this) and hope they don't renew this year!

3 - Just buy it on the 16th if they don't renew it (does it even show as available then?).

So what should i do and how?

Ooooo just noticed it also is showing up as a bad site!

I.e. 'this site may harm your computer'!

Yet it has literally nothing on it but a homepage with an image and contact info :S

How hard is this to get rid of?

    Couple of things:

#1 - Just because the domain expires on the 16th doesn't mean much - you are looking at a minimum time period of 2 months after the 16th for anything to actually happen. If you go do snapnames and search for "domain name life cycle" you will see how this works. Also, at any time the existing owner can re-new the domain.

#2 - Godaddy's service is BS as far as I am concerned - I have it and recently on one of my monitored domains if I hadn't taken action I would have lost it - godaddy didn't even notify me until I actually got the domain into my account (using another company) and then after the fact notified me of a change of registrar.

#3 - If you can get the existing owners contact information you can try and contact him - just to see what they say.

Based on your post though, if the name is already "tainted" not sure if I would even go after it.

Yeah it is 'tainted' but it is a really good one and it must be possible to get rid of that notice!

Ive sent them an email and let's hope they reply before i find another one.

This should help you with the expiration process:

Where is it showing up as a bad site? Is that a pop up that comes up and says that? Is it from some software on your PC like macafee or something?
