Slightly confused by wordpress installation instructions

Installing WordPress WordPress Codex

Place the WordPress files in the desired location on your web server:
If you want to integrate WordPress into the root of your domain (e.g. Example Web Page), move or upload all contents of the unzipped WordPress directory (but excluding the directory itself) into the root directory of your web server.
So what am I supposed to be leaving out?

That to me says upload everything, but leave out everything lol

"Directory" refers to the folder. So you upload all those files and folders that were within the unzipped folder, but not the folder itself.

When you unzip the WP package it has all the files and folders in a folder (directory) called "wordpress".

If you want your WP installation in the root directory of your site (i.e. to be seen at example.com) open the folder on your computer and upload only its content: all the files and folders from it to the root of your domain.

Otherwise, if you upload the wordpress folder itself, your blog will be at example.com/wordpress

    Does this help?

If you have a webhost with cpanel, I would highly recommend using that to install wordpress. You just go to fantastico in your cpanel and it takes like 4 clicks.

It's super simple, fast, and beats using FTP =D

The problem with doing it this way is your database is usually set up with cookie cutter settings so it can be a bit more secure if you set things up manually with all of your own settings. Saying that I did hear rumours of some changes to the install process with Wordpress 3.0.

Also a great plugin to install straight away is "WP Core Tweaks" this will remove a lot of the default formatting that comes with a fresh install.

        Good Luck!

If you're looking for a theme that's focused on adsense, go for the Heatmap Theme - it's free and easy to use. If you want a theme with lots of flexibility, easy to change columns, colors, etc. go for Flexibility 2 - also free.
