i'm a noob. have some knowledge, but barely started applying it. i want to start creating income ASAP. how many hours i week do you recommend i work on IM / passive income pursuit, without burning myself out or getting too bored? i realize everyone is different, but i'm trying to set some goals, and hours per week is much more quantifiable and in my control than other measures, which i'm also open to if anybody has suggestions. thanks.

It all boils down to how much time you have available and what your other commitments are. It's not always down to the amount of time itself, but rather what you do with the time you have.

Well Internet Marketing is where i make a living so i treat it like a 9am-5pm job, i suggest you put in at least a few hours a day whether this be spent purely on Article Marketing or the various other free marketing methods out there.

If you want to do all by yourself you might work IM as a full time job. Meaning 8 or more hours per day. When I just started I remember spending whole days and even weeks on just reading information and experimenting. I even got sick from doing it, but eventually I learned more and more and know I feel like I know all the basic stuff, so setting up a campaign doesn't seem like such a hassle anymore. I basically work IM in my spare time and still make good money.

It was worth it I must say.

The question is 'how badly do you want to succeed'... If you want it badly you'll put the hours in. As your working for yourself I think you should drop the 9-5 thinking and set daily goals. Just make sure you hit your targets each day. Some days you may reward yourself for getting your tasks done on time. Other days you may have to work late.

If you enjoy what your doing you can make a career out of it. If you despise it I suggest looking elsewhere. Dont be fooled in thinking you can work hard now and put yourself on autopilot for months on end. It doesnt work that way (atleast for me anyway).

    Good luck in youir endeavours

I work about 4 to 6 hours per day right now excluding the time i spent on reading articles.

If all that included, I think i should have hit the 8 hours worktime.

I'm also just starting out as well.

It all comes down to how BAD do you really want to make a pasive income and how much. If you want to succeed at anything, you cant be lazy and must work HARD to get there. Everybody who is successful worked hard, so one must prepared to sacrifice. There are no shortcuts!

The more time you put in, the more you will get back, in both income and experience gained. So the more the better!

If 2 hours a day would get you to success in a year, then 4 hours a day will get you there in 6 months.

As much time as possible. I would do as much as you can fit in during the week and then take weekends off - it can be very easy to burn yourself out.

I would also make sure you have a plan and maybe have a mini plan set up for each day which you can do the night before. This will make sure you don't waste time.

Also if you are starting out, I would spend my time making one site work and one route work.

Try not to focus on quick money because this can set you off track and waste lots of time.

Remember when setting up your schedule, you need to divide them into 2 major activities (esp since you're just starting out).

    1. Learning - All your reading, brushing up on your knowledge, keeping up with trends etc. Don't spend more than 20% of your time on this in order to avoid information overload. Limiting yourself in this way forces you to stick with what is important. Pick one method and work on it exclusively for a fair bit until you know whether it is worth pursuing further or not.

    2. Application - Most methods (whichever one you choose) will typically consist of 3 things you need to focus on. I'll use a model Edmund Loh taught me which I think is relevant here. Product, Operations, Marketing with a ratio of 20-20-60. Spend most of your time on Marketing (traffic generation, lead capture, etc).

The key point here is remembering to allocate the large bulk of your time taking action or applying the things you have learnt. I spent a lot of my time in my early days dilly dallying with "learning" much more than "application" and it didn't get me anywhere.

    Hope that helps.

Some very good answers here, you def want to put as much time as you can into this whole process. If you want business like results then you have to treat this like a business. Use your time and your money to keep reinvesting into the business model.

It's good to put in as much time as you can BUT I want to say that it's very easy to waste time when you work for yourself, and to fool yourself that you're being productive.

Going on twitter all day - not productive,
Reading eBooks all day and not taking action - not productive,
Checking emails all the time - not productive.

If you work 8 hours a day, make those hours count. Some people who only work on IM for a couple of hours a day around their day job could be 100x more productive than people who work all day long but never really achieve what they need to.

You will always go through unproductive times, but just remember that every hour will take you closer to your goals if you take action.

    ~Ruth

In all honestly it all depends. It could take you an hour a day.. or 24 hours and you could still see no difference.

It's about finding the right method that works an then implementing it x 1000!

I think this is what you want to aim for:

Full time 3-4 hours a day

Part time 1-2 hours a day

Even full time you have amazing flexibiltiy. Take weeks off. Take days off. Work morning or afternoons or evenings etc... You can kind of keep working like this until you die. Great!

I have been doing IM for quite sometime. I started while employed full time so I dedicated about four hours a day, therefore I treated it like a part time. NOW, since being laid off, I have dedicated myself to pursuing it full time. I put in a lot of work hours and have been successful doing so. Like others said here, it all depends what goals you set for yourself and whether or not you want to do this full time. There is not doubt that some aspects require a lot of work.

      80 Hours a week...

It's a business, you have to look at it as one. I on average work between 8 and 12hrs a day. I give myself Sunday off.

People have this misconception that it's a quick and easy profit, the truth is you have to work your ass off like any other business startup.

I can't inderstand what you guys do in this 10 hours+ I.M. is simply tracking right?

I mean why spend 30+ minutes writing an article when you can hire someone to do it for $3. Why post 30 backlinks when it costs $15. etc... Why D.I.Y. when you can get others to do it for low prices?

    Watch ya

The amount of hours you want to work is totally up to you. When l first started l could only do this part time. I was spending about three hours a day after work. The trouble is many people do too many things at once. If you are planning to multi task when you first start out l would advise you not to. The reason why is because there is too much to take in. Take one step at a time. First thing to do is set up a website or blog, become a expert at this then move on to the next stage (create a product, promote someone else product, etc).

You will soon realise how much time you need to achieve each task. As soon as you start making money from the internet you will want to carry on and on. Hope things go well for ya

I try to match my time off with my spouse. She is on 2 weeks days, 2 weeks nights. I work on IM about 8 hours a day dividing it between about 25% learning, 60% doing, 15% gauging, testing or adjusting things.

One of my resolutions is also to begin dividing my time between projects that make immediate money (75%), 1 Year Money (20%) and Long-Term Life Money (5%). Will adjust those as I see how it works.

One thing to avoid burnout I recommend is getting up and going somewhere else for a lunch hour. To a park or coffee shop or to meet friends. It breaks up the day with a new perspective.

Btw, just from experience, remember you are going to fail at things about 80% of the time until you get going, so be sure to include that learning time each day to lower that rate, thus making more use of the same hours. But DO NOT spend all your time learning. Taking action is the only thing that makes money.

I have been looking at IM for 3-4 weeks, i spend 2-3 hrs per day just reading and getting some ideas on whats out there, trying to find what best suits me and whether i can do anything with my off line business online.

When I finally decide on what I will do I will already be in the habit of spending 2-3 hours per day on IM. I got a feeling though when I finally start to see some income coming in I will spend more and more time doing it.

If you believe in the route you take and you enjoy it, you will spend more time on your business and it wont feel like work.

I'm pretty new to IM myself. Now that I'm getting more into it and have a plan to follow and goals to meet I've been spending as much time as possible. I want this to eventually replace my current job so I'm highly motivated to get as much done as possible without getting burned out on it.

So I agree with the posters here when they say "you get out of it what you put into it"

I was putting in around 30 hours a week when working full time. That was badly effecting my job as an company accountant to stage where I felt the 'weak link' in the office. So I took the gamble and resigned (yeah can u believe it in times of recession and not much back up income and 2 kids and wife to support). But I guess I am not averse to risk taking which is the hallmark of many great past and present entreprenuers.

I saw and realized the potential of internet and since last september I have thrown myself full time into IM.

Now I am putting in 8-12 hours a day every day. If anything, I am looking to put more hours in due to sending my wife and kids on a 6 month holiday.

My philosphy is basically 'nothing happens until u put the effort and hard work' and that there is no such thing as luck, u just create your own luck yourself. So I have mentally prepared myself for a hard slog which is very important.

I believe internet coupled with direct response marketing is one of the last remaining ways to build yourself a fortune...And I sure am gonna give it my best shot.

When it comes to the time you put in, it's all quality over quantity.

As Ruth P said, there's a HUGE difference between reading, researching, screwing around, etc. and Getting Things Done.

An hour of ebook writing, backlink-building, article-writing, video-making, site-building, etc. is FAR more productive than spending six hours playing on Twitter, Facebook, WSOs you bought, and yes, the Warrior Forum itself. (While the WF is an excellent resource, I understand it's quite addicting - I fall into that trap myself - and well, while there's much to learn, you're just not going to get anything done if you're constantly reading >)

For right now, I say start small. See just how much you get done in One Hour. If you really are working on your business, you can move up to two, three, four, whatever, complete with coffee break. Learn how to make the best use of the time you've got, before indefinitely committing a certain number of hours a day.

WITH the assistance of employees and actual assitants, I myself spend at least 50-60 hours a week on IM. It will eventually get to the point where I can spend a lot less time, but for now... its worth the money to do a lot of the work myself.

I keep hearing that doing just a little each day will eventually start giving you the returns. I think its probably what you do, where you do it, adn how often,. NOW--- time is something that we are all short off. and finding the smartest way is probably the best. I read running your business in 5 mns a day works!-not for me lol. More like 3 -4 hours a day to start with. The internet isa big big place to get known in.

In my opinion it really depends on what you are tryng to do and what your personal goals are. Obviously the more you work the better (for the most part as long as you don't wear yourself out), it just depends on how bad you want it.

I recommend that you get a game plan together and follow it. A lot of new marketers will spend way too much time and money on the newest latest ebook with the newest and biggest secret to make money online. Don't fall for this crap, and just stick to good old fashioned keyword research and SEO.

    Hope this helps.
