HELP: How do I transfer a Wordpress Blog to another server without losing post and data?

I need some help.

I'm a Newbie when talking about blogs. I made one a few weeks ago and now I'm trying to move it to another server.

Anyone know how to go about doing this without losing posts, comments, plugins, theme, etc. ?

And if you could elaborate with detail all the instructions, that would be way better.

    Hi Jose,

In order to move the blog, you need to copy the files and the database. I generally outsource this to my trusted assistant, so that I don't have to worry about it!

Good luck getting your blog transferred!

It all depends on your hosting, but just back up your database and install it on the new one.

Then copy ALL your files, and load those to the new one.

Finally, change your wp-config file to reflect the new settings.

Again...you do this in different ways with different hosts.

        (Host Gator?)

If you're moving FROM another cpanel, then it should be super easy. Just do a backup of the entire site with the wizzard, or back up just the files and then just the database separately.

If transfering from cpanel to cpanel it can be done in like 10 seconds.. Depends upon what server you have..

Other than that make a backup of the site and db. Once done go to new host upload the backup, create the db, edit the config file, and upload db to your phpmyadmin.

Hi Jose, I've done this a few times - here's the easiest way that I've found to do it:

    1) Make a backup of your blog

    2) If you have edited the theme, ftp the folder to your desktop, also ftp your plugins folder. In your existing install go to manage/export/download export file and export the xml file to your desktop.

    3) Change the dns for your domain name to that of your new server

    4) At the new location, use fantastico to set up a new install of wordpress on your domain. Go to your admin panel and delete the post and page that the install created. I take out the blogroll links too.

    5) Upload your theme (if you have edited it) and your plugins. Activate the theme.

    6) Go to manage/import/wordpress/browse and import the xml file (select the map to existing user option and the download and import file attachments option) Submit.

    7) Activate your plugins

That's it. You'll have to do it to make sense of this, but it's fairly easy.

The only issues I run into is that fantastico creates the blog without the www I change this so the www is present, not sure what difference this makes? Also not sure if this transfers anything that you've set up in text widgets so make copies and add the info to your new site if neeeded.

Thanks Tony for the help but I didn't get it.

Instead I tried the Live chat and they sent me to fill out a form which I didn't understand as well.

I guess I'll try to do what you guys have said and hope it works.

      God I hate blogs now!

If all else fails you can just do an export of your current installed blog from your dashboard, save the xml file to your hard drive.

Install Wordpress as usual, then run the "import" by directing to the saved XML file.

That should restore all of your posts, but not other customizations however.

        Good luck!

Hostgator will do it for you, send a live chat and open a support ticket. Otherwise, phpmyadmin as mentioned above should be foolproof for ya.

Hostgator will transfer the first site for free, this is true...

If it falls under their requirements. Any site after the first the charge a small fee for .. I think it is something like $15 or something..
