As far as I know there is no reason you cannot begin to do all the work you need to right away. What I would do is go to twitterfeed.com : feed your blog to twitter and put your RSS feed in there and have it feed to Ping.fm / Update all of your social networks at once! Here you can sign up for a ton of places that will be great help to build up your site.

Normally I would use Social Marker . com to bookmark and RSSBot to feed my blog URL

Are you saying that using twitterfeed.com and feeding Ping.fm I will automatically be bookmarked on all those social networks? Do I have to register with all the social networks independantly first?

If you submit your link to google, bing and yahoo and leave it at that it could take weeks for the bots to get to your site.

By using RSS and social bookmarking websites you are leaveraging the popularity of these websites to get your site indexed quicker.

Search engine bots visit these websites regularly, and when they find your link, they follow it which in turn gets you indexed.

Don't wait for the search engines to come to you, you need to go to them.

pinging etc will help it get indexed. In fact you should have saved the time submitting it to the search engines and just pinged it.

I think you're doing it backward...

Just activate xml sitemap plugin and your site will be indexed by search engines without submitting it to them. You can submit your site to all SBs if you want right after your article is live... No need to submit to search engines... just submit your sitemap to webmaster central.
