Subdirectory/folder vs. Separate domain/website

I have a small publishing company, and have 4 books in one topic area -- the next book will be for a different audience, altho in the same general topic area. (The 1st 4books are all for farmers or market gardeners, while the next book is still agriculture-related, but aimed at consumers, not growers). I am trying to decide between having a separate website/domain for the new book vs. putting it in a separate folder/directory of the main website. It seems like having a separate domain/website would be advantageous for keywords, both in the domain name and pages. But I am wondering if (using a subdirectory/folder scenario) and using a silo structure serve the same purpose and be as effective for seo?

Good luck deciding, hope you post when you find out which method produced the best results.

I forgot to mention, I know a 3rd option is a subdomain -- but that's a big topic.... I've found a lot of pro's and con's on both sides of subdomains, but I've decided not to use them -- for one thing, apparently they're viewed by google as a separate domain, so I'd just as soon set up a separate domain.

If you don't mind spending another $24/year, get the other three
domains. Then you'll have a little web of your own and you can
link from one domain to the other.

While siloing or whatever can be a good idea, if you've got the
energy to really go for it, build a site for each book with each
site having pages relevant to the book it's about... and also about
topics relevant to your other books, from which you can link
outwards to the relevant sites and also Amazon, et. al.

SEO is tedious, but not an exact science. You can kind of bumble
through it and have success if you're consistent about linking
and relevance everywhere you put content.
