List Control - yeah, that's just what this forum needs

Yes we all need list control.

But, sorry to hoodwink ya, this has nothing to do with an apparent recent launch that's been going on recently, but it IS related to the seemingly unending desire for some folk to create lists, like this:

Whos's your favorite marketer?
Who's your favorite teacher?
Who's your favorite g*u*r*u?
Who's your fave Warrior?
Who's list are you on?
What do you hate about IM?
What's your favorite beer?

With the possible exception of the last one, which I made up and isn't in fact a list, I don't care!

And neither should you.

As the sub heading to this forum says, this is, 'Where We Talk About Making Money'

Forget about what other people think and do. Get on with the job of running your own business and leave these inane, pointless lists to the Off Topic forum.

    Thanks for posting this, Peter.

It's the same reason why opinion polls shouldn't make the tiniest difference to the way one thinks.

If a poll said 99.99999% of the people supported mandatory cheese inspections, that doesn't make it okay.

To be blunt, people need to learn to think for themselves.

Yes, you can get guidance, feedback, suggestions, support, validation, coaching, mentoring, and advice, but not at the expense of your own personal beliefs and moral compass.

    All the best,
    Michael

I think that particular inane, pointless list is indeed in the Off Topic forum.

But as for the rest of your post -- I agree. And I also agree with Michael, who said people need to learn to think for themselves.

I'd also add that people need to create business plans. That way, when the next "big and shiny" product comes out, you won't get distracted. Just check your business plan to see this product would actually help you further your goals. If so, buy it and use it. If not, ignore it and move on.

    Cheers,
    Becky

Thanks for posting, Peter. I've been guilty of participating in these; gotta quit contributing to the delinquency of the intellectually lazy...

      Oh, and my favorite beer?

It is amazing how many people on this forum, who purport to be running their own business, don't think for themselves. Surely that can't be the case?

I truly believe that you cannot run a business and be devoid of independent thought, therefore they're not running a business, are they - they're just pi**ing about, pretending.

        But no sweat.

        There's a great real-life metaphor that I've mentioned before:

        ***********
A championship-winning oarsman was interviewed about their rival boat crew, what did he think of the rival's troubles?

"Not in our boat." He replied.

        ***********

It's a useful phrase to keep with you, especially just before you find yourself about to wade into a conversation/discussion that you know ain't going anywhere:

        Not in our boat!

I've probably done it myself too John. It's alright to waste a bit of time on these things, but some take it far too seriously.

And I'd gladly buy you a beer, but the button's gone missing!

Here's how to get your thread blazing with replies...

          Leave the title as is.

Delete ALL of your original post and replace it with this post (be sure to copy and paste in it's entirety):

          Frank Kern
Now go get yourself a bottle of your favorite beer... and watch your thread burn up like a prairie fire.

Hey, don't mess with my cheese!

Psst...leave to a guy from Wisconsin to figure out how to work 'cheese' into a thread about list control.

    Peter, favorite????????????????????

You forgot to ask which ice cream, wine, chocolate, place to live etc as well.

One other thing you missed is the people who tend to ask these questions are not running their own business. They come with an employee mindset and can't think for themselves.

Amen brother Peter .. Preach it! - Some people seriously need to sign-off and go to their own website and start marketing it from what they have learned instead of wondering who is rich and who is not, who is a guru and who is not, who is famous or who is not..

I would be shocked to know that some do not actually have a shrine in their home to some of these so-called gurus.

Whos's your favorite marketer? -- me
Who's your favorite teacher? -- Ms. Landley (5th grade)
    Who's your favorite g*u*r*u? -- Dalai Lama
Who's your fave Warrior? -- The meek one in back who looked really scared when they were chanting, "Warriors, come out and play-ay."
Who's list are you on? -- I was voted least likely to take anything seriously back in high school
What do you hate about IM? -- When the person you're im'ing won't let you get a word in edge-wise
What's your favorite beer? -- How random. Shiner Bock, local Texas favorite.
I couldn't really be bothered to read everything else, but these list thingies are like wet paint signs to me. Wait, were we not supposed to fill out this list? It looks like nobody else did. What's the deal?

Yes, of course you were supposed to fill out the list. But you were also supposed to immediately forward it to ten friends. I can't remember why, though. Either Bill Gates would send you a couple thousand bucks or something bad wouldn't happen to you. Or maybe both.

Yup, Peter, I sometimes get the feeling that people posting that stuff have shrines set up in their bedrooms with pictures of their fave g.uru, beads, incense, and candles burning while they recite some mantra over and over each morning.

Me?--I don't have the candles and beads in my bedroom, just a poster of Natalie Merchant and a framed dollar--the first one I ever made selling one of my books. (Before you ask, yes--it's a Confederate war bond from 1861

Now there's an image I'll have to get out of my head...

Camera angled from behind. Basement bedroom, walls covered with assorted posters and centerfolds. In the corner, a table with a framed screen capture of Kern surrounded by candles and incense. On the floor, in classic lotus position, sits a scruffy dude chanting "buy my ****, buy my ****, buy my ****..."

      Thanks a lot, Mike...

John, the reference to the "scruffy dude" must be to me . I knew you had voyeuristic tendencies. You've been window peeking again and now my secret is out!

But revenge is sweet. If you've got an image of a 58 year old fat Irish guy with his booty crack showing while sitting in that lotus position--well, that's gunna haunt you forever :p. --Mike

Yes all these inane topics do get annoying, particularly the Frank Kern lovefest. But regarding him, he did gross 2 million in sales with this latest launch in just a few hours, so I think marketers can admire him!

As for all the other silly topics, well, it a forum, after all. People are going to start topics that will quite likely waste your time, particularly if it's a rant or meaningless to making money poll. That's just the way it is...(cue song here)

Or how about whiny threads, or posts that just complain, complain, complain.

I may be the master at it, but isn't it the job of warriors to monitor this and report it?

If anyone on this damn forum has a complaint, or wants to sit and whine, there is a button which looks like this:

USE IT, REPORT the junk. Save the world...one step at a time. Just takes one action, to start a chain of events afterward.

So what chain of events do you want to start? Just chit chats and arguments? Just complaints and whining?

Or simply use the TOOLS Allen has provided you with to get rid of the junk so that you don't have to sit there getting a headache sifting through junk...so that you don't have to sit there wasting your time telling people to get a life....so that you don't have to sit there getting mad when you see trolls all over the place!

And if you want to call me out on it, it wouldn't bother me, because I am NOT always right when I post my whiny threads, or when I post my complaints on here. Just like everyone else is not always right. I would gladly admit that, should someone take action, but until then, deal with it!

Why should it be the noobs who only get their posts removed? Why should they have to feel discriminated against and go on a rampage in the off topic forum complaining that their thread added value and it was removed, whilst there are others whose threads are totally useless and never get removed?

But I have yet to see anyone take action against me either. So now's the time. Step up to the plate, it's your turn to bat!
