Which translation software does the best at translating foreign languages into English.

  • I've always found Google Translate the best - but by best I don't mean it does a particularly good job. It does a fairly literal translation but misses some of the nuances that a human would notice.

I've used it, I'm looking for a software program that translates articles
on your computer, SYSTRAN 6 is one of the best but it's $800.

I am a linguist (and polyglot) who studied translation theory and methodology - and I can tell you there is no intelligent software (yet) that can translate the meaning and not words.

For a while just out of curiousity I was following the evolution of different translation tools but then I gave up... they are still far from it.

Anyway, I went to check out the systran and used their online sample. I assume they do there their best (it's a sales page!) and tried to translate a website from English... and it's horrible.

    Just my $0.02

You don't using a software that uses the online translators? You can find them for free.. Yes, they require you to have your PC connected to the Internet during translation..

It would help if you posted the name of the best one if you've
    tested out some of them.

In my opinion there is no "best".

      Just bad and worse

Babelfish gives you exactly the same translation as if you go to systransoft.com
    (I just checked...)

    And my opinion didn't change.

Google translate is the best but if you are looking to translate professional information (books, journals, etc) you need to hire a translater. No tool will be good enough to do this task automatically, it needs to be done by a professional.
