Email Question

This is a questions for everyone that owns and operates a website. Do you get a ton of unsolicited emails from promotional companies? Lately it seems as though I have gotten tons of,"We can get you amazing results." emails. I also get about 1 or 2 a day that say,"Contact us immediately, your great great uncle just died and we have 1 billion dollars to give you."

Obviously the last ones are a bunch of scammers but the ones I am getting from promotional companies say that I am on their mailing list. I know for a fact that I have never signed up for anything with the email they are sending it to, so do these companies seek these emails out and just place them on their list without permission? And if so, is that legal?

    I get these myself and I'm really wondering if I could hit them with some kind of "unsolicited mail" letter from my lawyer. As far as I know, an unsubscribe button is a MUST these days. But sending out mail to "potential customers" ... might be a grey area here and many companies obviously exploit this.

      i still get over 100 junk mails a day after lots of years. You will find a lot of junk emails that say unsubscibe do the complete opposite.

    Yeah, no doubt that these companies are such a con. Their questionable practices makes things worse for everyone. This is exactly why I try to do everything by the book, less things I have to worry about in the future.

    Hmm .... i should probably stop using admin@ then as i get a few of these.

    No enough yet to really care but if they become a flood i can see the annoyance factor there!

    I like getting the ones that say "We can get you on the front page of Google". I always laugh because I'm already on the front page for my keywords. If they'd just taken 5 minutes to check... ha ha

    On a lighter note there is a script out there (cant remember where) where you can put a link on your site that auto-generates 1 million random garbage email addresses for the email crawlers.... Mayeb if you search google it'll be listed.
