keyword domain names with hyphens

I have read here and other places that you should avoid using the "-" in domain names. Question is this.

When looking for a good key phrase domain name with the following actual criteria:
searches: 45000 (exact)
competition: 42500 exact 102000 broad

The .com .net .org and .info are taken but are parked pages and not even in top 200 results. The phrase with the "-" not taken.

What is the opinion of this situation?

It's been discussed, even argued here several times... do a quick search to see what I mean.

You can *definately* get a dashed domain to rank, I have several in top 10 across different niches.

The big question is: If the domains without dashes aren't ranking, what IS? THAT is your competition. IF the top results are all authority sites, it will be harder to rank any domain against them (not impossible, but tougher).

I prefer to add a word to the end of the domain rather than use hyphens, so if I wanted popularkeyword, but popularkeyword.com, .net and .org were all taken, instead of using popular-keyword.com, I'd use popularkeywordinfo.com, popularkeywordsite.com, popularkeywordguide.com, etc.
