Paypal eCheck - How to Deliver Only After Clearing

Hey Warriors,

I have had buyers pay via eCheck and the check never clearing.

I'm sure there is a way to notify people to only deliver the goods (i.e download page) once a payment has cleared, except I don't know how to do this!

Can you please help me?

Much appreciated!

Warmly,
Mikey

Your best bet, honestly, is to just not accept an echeck as payment. You just don't need that extra hassle.

Now as far as your question, I'm sorry, I don't know how to do that in an automated way.

      Thanks for the reply Lisa

Would you know if not accepting them period, outweighs the benefit of how many times an echeck bounces as opposed to how many go through?

What's your experience? Because I have had some bounced echecks but haven't gotten enough to know what that ratio is. Like would it be better to deal with the bounce rate in relation to how many more sales one makes accepting echecks...

      thanks again

You know, I really don't have any solid numbers, I just know that having to monitor my Paypal account to see if a payment has cleared takes up too much of my time. In an age of credit cards, debit cards and instant transfers, there's really just no reason to use an echeck, in my opinion.

ya good point I totally agree. If I see more of these coming in I'll just stop accepting them period.

Yeah, especially if you HAVE had them bounce. I've never actually had that happen, but I'm an instant-gratification type...I want the money when you buy the product and not three days later. KWIM?

As far as how many sales you'll lose? I don't think that too many people actually use the echeck option anymore so I think sales lost will be minimal if any. If a buyer wants the product badly enough, they'll think of a way to pay for it that you'll accept.

I know there are many marketers who get even more payments on a daily basis via Paypal, so take this with a grain of salt, but I get multiple payments every day and they are only very rarely echecks. I have been scammed maybe twice, so I consider it just a cost of doing business. If you don't see it very often, suck it up and move on. IMO.

Sure it's a cost of business and damn right I'd suck it up if the profit outweighed the loss. That's why I was asking if anyone knew the numbers...

I do not take e-checks but I can tell you this: My uncle owns a dry cleaning shop and he has been getting more and more bounced checks then ever. I am betting it is due more to the economy then anything else, though I could be wrong since I have never been the debtor / bounce a check type so understanding that reality is hard for me since that is not my reality.

I know it's sad that we have to share a reality with low-lives

Oh well, you know the saying "it only takes one match to light up a room full of darkness"...so plenty of good things to look forward to on a brighter note

    Mickey...

I would not use the echecks. I have had people scam me using them.

I spoke to Paypal and there is actually a flaw in thier system. What happens is people pay by echeck, get the product, then say the check is fraud and cancel it.

Paypal knows it's a problem but there's nothing they will or can do.

So best not to have them.

Plus as mentioned before... Who doesn't have a debit or credit card.

Last time a customer bought my ebook with an e-check, Paypal held both the funds AND delivery of my ebook until the check cleared. Took about 5-7 days. Paypal sent me a notice about this too.

Then after about 6 days, I got the funds and the buyer got the ebook.

Don't know how long they have been doing this but that was my experience.

If this is the case then that's perfect. Do you deliver the ebook by simply telling paypal to redirect to the download page once the transaction is complete?

      thanks

This is done automatically by Paypal. I sell many e-products and also use
DPD - Digital Product Delivery - Sell Downloads and Run Your Own Affiliate Program

I get an email to say that someone has paid by e-cheque but the product is not delivered until it clears. DPD recieve notification from Paypal when the e-cheque clears and deliver the product. It works automatically and perfectly.

I used to work for a company that I believe used paypal's api or maybe it was another part of their payment confirmation system which would not allow the product to be given until the echeck cleared. I was not in that department so I am not exactly sure how it worked, but I will try and get more info for you and let you know.

The only caveat here would be that they had their own admin area on their site that allowed the download of the product and it would not place the product in that persons account until finds were cleared, but in reality it would seem it should work the same way as sending someone a download link.

One other note is that if someone is gonnna scam you they have other ways. I don't know how many times I have seen someone just claim they did not make the payment (even using a cc) and paypal most always sided with the supposed purchaser. I am not sure how many of those cases were really someone lying or there cc info was actually compromised. At any rate, the fact is their are these people all over the internet due to their supposed anonymity and there is no real way to stop all of it so you must factor it in as a hard business cost or loss in the long run. You should definitely take all necessary steps to avoid it, but unfortunately it is inevitable.

Most IPN based systems will hold the delivery until payment clears.
eg DLguard or e-junkie are popular ones that do this.
