After doing mentoring and selling IM products to other IMers for 4 years now, I've come up with about ten billion reasons why IMers tend to NOT make money in this business. I've even had one-on-one clients who slapped down 10k+ with me and all the while, I was searching for WHY these peeps fail to actually do anything. Traffic, conversions, Mindset, self sabotage, ADD, fear of success, fear of ridicule, personal beliefs and self confidence, skills, focus, sticking to one thing, this, that, whatever... I have developed a new slogan now and it's coming up time and time again as one of the number one reasons people fail to do anything, and just getting them to do this one thing is creating results. You Need To Focus More On Your Focus! I've had a slogan/insight type of thing where I said there are different levels of focus for IMers... ---Moon light focus (dim focus of light). This is where you're kinda softly focused on anything... broad strokes... sort of just witnessing things... taking no action whatsoever... more of an observer... a lurker of a marketer. ---Sun light focus (spread out across half the planet, but more focused light than moonlight) Sort of brighter now, starting to understand some stuff, can talk a good game as if you're a hot shot marketer making big bucks, but arent. Sort of spread out over too many ideas and distractions, but still not taking strong focused action towards one specific way of making money ---Magnified glass focus (can catch stuff on fire because it's more concentrated focused light) Now we're entering the IMers who actually complete things and make money. Here and there, they stay focused on one thing long enough to get results (if you hold a magnified glass long enough, the sun light will catch a leaf on fire) Then, there's my "Laser Beam 3000" focus Can cut steel it's light is so focused! This is where you are so focused, so determined, and taking action without regard to any of the fears mentioned above. Nothing will stand in your way, and you have such intense focus, the world moves out of the way for you! You are bolder, more aggressive, and more focused. For IMers, most never reach my coined "Laser Beam 3000" level. In fact, I'd guess most people on the planet never focus like that on anything at all. Just a bunch of lazy zombies coasting through life taking what life has to give them. Therefore... You Need To Focus More On Your Focus! ~Eric Louviere |

Great concept, This could also apply to all the students who sign-up for Online College but drop out or perform badly. I myself was only magnified Glass focused in College. I will attempt to be Laser Beam 5000 Focused with my current Online business. Thanx. |

That was a brilliant post. Many people give up without knowing how close they were to success. I must admit this, i gave up a 101 times before finally decided to redefine my path. It takes determination against all odds to succeed. John |

Agreed - The IM community is one of the few communities that you get paid EXACTLY what you're worth. If you work half assed you'll get paid half assed. If you pour your heart, soul, sweat and blood into it you'll be very well compensated. |

This does apply to every one. I really like your focus analogy. My most recent client is having a hard time understanding this. She wants it all right now but with an army of one, her self. It makes it hard to get her started and when she does it doesn't last long enough to get results. And of course I can see my self there. I know I am not a Laser Beem 3000. Part of it comes from having gone down the wrong path, so those things I started that did not come to fruition seem kind of nagging. Keeping my eye on the goal and knowing my purpose helps....so does having great coaching. |

Laser Beam 3000 That actually came from a cartoon my 2 year old son watches called wow wow wubzy. he digs that cartoon. but, there's this rabbit looking character who is a real fixer upper type, and everything that character comes up with is something 3000. super hammer 3000 will fix that my fly swatter 3000 will take care of that I've got my hefty power saw 3000 anyway, I thought it was kinda funny... but used "laser beam 3000" on a webinar and people keep referring to that. so, I guess it stuck. I've been focused all day. --Did a webinar --spected out the new design for job crusher --spent hours with my new programmers --did a couple one on one's -- recruited some affiliates to promote my new PLR mentoring site --shot a new sales video -- uploaded and rendered a bunch of videos -- and am now on skype with someone across the world from me about IM stuff (mastermind) it's now 3am in Austin I started at noon took some breaks of course and will take most of the weekend off Money never sleeps Eric PS - not a lazy zombie here!! |

I suspect a lot of people disdain work, yet desire the rewards that only working hard and smart can bring. They long for a magic pill and that is why they dart from one program to another looking for something that will magically transform their lives.Thank you very much.Nobody ever achieved anything great without focus.

Money never sleeps! Interesting. I sleep for a few hours each day and it is taking its toll on me.The truth is I spend most of my time working,my challenge is learning how to relax!I was just wondering Eric, don't you think one can achieve a lot more through outsourcing? Is the 'Four hour work week ' a myth? Yes, true. Dedication, persistence, and laser-sharp focus is the key to success, and this applies to other areas besides just internet marketing. However, I feel that the newbies are not entirely to blame because in this IM industry especially, they are constantly being bombarded by "gurus" telling them to follow this next super-duper, all-in-one, don't-need-to-do-anything, push-button instant millionaire automatic system. Newbies need to be more realistic, discover where their skills and passion lies, and commit to making their chosen business model work for them. Alex |

much need advice for me right now. love the imagery! focus has been the #1 killer of me advancing 'things' lately. always seems to be something getting in the way of having a productive day, or even week. BUT...went to a meeting and met up with some local IM types and got some needed feedback on some of my projects...modest interest in some, but some 'big eyes' at one in particular. even a "and this is working now?" so while I am not quite to laser 3000 ? close to it. now I know whatI need to work on. no other projects until this one is finished! just have to really bear down on not letting any distractions soak up my mind/time. thanks for the thoughts, & 'see' you at JC ![]() KEY (eric) zmsan: good idea about meditating. I used to meditate every day, but just fell into bad (time) habits. going to put it back into the daily regimen. |

One thing also to keep in mind is what you should be focusing on. I think a lot of people create "busy work" which distracts them from money making activities. Instead, get stuff out there and selling. I once launched a salesletter with a PayPal button selling something before I even had a product. I just wanted to see if it would convert. I dont advice doing that, but I was a newbie and wanted to see if it would convert first before I spent all that time creating a product. That's an example of not letting busy work get in the way... distracting yourself from taking the right action and focusing on the right things. Any time you spend on copywriting, conversions, traffic generation, product creation, branding and sales processes is money making activity time. It's being productive in the right ways and focusing on the right things. ...Spending a week installing a pretty blog is not a good example of "money making" activities for newbies. I guess it could be, but a week? Anyway, you get the picture. Rock On, Eric Louviere |

I really appreciate this post. There really is a huge difference between piddling around on the forum, going back and forth between ebooks you bought, thinking "YAY another way to make money!" then shoving it back in the closet... and then determining EXACTLY what you need to do, blocking out all distractions, getting things done and methodically crossing everything off your list. There are people who make money, and people who make excuses. There are plenty of excuses to be made... but after awhile, you have to question if these people are so wrapped up in excuses that they even want the money. BTW, I'm also in Austin, and a nightowl |

2 months into Im myself and you just nailed my phases. Brilliant, I catch myself at different stages, but know what I have to do. What works, whats hard. I actually imagine a normal person feeling the feelings I do at different emotioinal points and remind myself. This is where most will stop and go somewhere to seek comfort in their head and usually look for or "buy a different approach to get that excited feeling back. Kind of deep, but love your post!

Eric, Since you're from Texas I am sure you know who Urban Meyer is even though he is the head coach of the Florida Gators. I talked to a friend of mine that knew Urban Meyer and said that he would get done in 45 minutes what it would take most coaches all day to accomplish. No wonder why he has achieved such great success at a young age. Also a guy here in my little city has a company that has nearly a $2 billion real estate portfolio. When they were talking about the guy who started it they said he was the most focused person they have ever been around. I know that hard work, this, that, etc...are all important to success. However I believe the number 1 thing is focus. After you have that everything else just falls into place. |

Great post, but there`s just so much information, courses, programs, etc. about IM that it`s too hard not to get distracted. I guess the best thing a newbie can do is to get a mentor, then again, is not easy to find a real good one and not a self-proclaimed guru.

A truly brilliant post and absolutely correct. You have to believe in yourself before you can take action and a lot of people lack that confidence when it comes to IM. Set a fairly short term goal for yourself and devote all of your energy to making that goal a reality. I think people have had their heads flooded with all of the false marketing hype out there about making tons of money in a single day or a month. When they try to develop a method to make some money, they often give up because they are not able to achieve the results that they "think" others are able to achieve in that same time frame. The truth of the matter is that the internet doesn't evolve overnight and you can't expect to make a huge impression on it in the same amount of time either. Sure, maybe some people do make a ton of money every single day but that doesn't mean that you are a failure because you can't do it. Figure out how to make a single dollar on the internet and then repeat that process. If you can find a way that will still create those dollars while you move on to other projects, that will end up building into a substantial income for you. As others have mentioned before, the key is to actually complete a project before you consume yourself in something else. If you have problems staying focused on a single website or subject for too long, then your best bet is to come up with websites that you can create and market and then move on to something else. Content based websites will require your daily attention while some types of affiliate based sites can easily be a "set and forget" business model. Figure out what works for you, put it into action, rinse and repeat. Worse case, if you create some sources of residual income and then get too lazy to keep repeating the process you will at least have regular money coming from the projects you actually managed to complete. |

Hey Eric, great post. Couldn't agree with you more. Most of the people on this forum probably have enough information right now to start making money quickly but we all know an object at rest tends to stay at rest. Well I'm here to tell you folks that that equation definitely works both ways! I recently went from the sunlight level of focus to the magnified glass level of focus and have honestly gotten more targeted, well defined work done in the last couple of weeks than I did all last year. Once you start doing productive things on a regular basis--the momentum picks up and you are now a body in motion. And once you're a body in motion it actually becomes more difficult to go back to your routine of doing nothing than it is to do something productive. My next goal is Laser Beam 3000 Sincerely, David |

Realized just today after having Google Analytics conversion tracking on for a month that ALL my focus really needs to go into ONE keyword - it is the only one that converts. A relief in a way, but it is very competitive so I need to let go of all fears and go for it.
