Facebook takes over Google

I don't see a thread about this but a new story has just come up on telly and I wanted to get the warriors thoughts.

Moderator Comment: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ebsite-us.html

It mentioned Facebook has taken over Google by being the most visited site in America. What are your thoughts on this and where do you see sites like Google, Facebook, Twitter ect in the years to come?

MySpace was a craze, then Facebook, Twitter is rising.

There's always something new. We're consumers, it takes us awhile to consume, but we'll consume it all eventually.

    That's my opinion at least.

The real question you should be asking is not which is the most "visited" site, but which is the most "profitable" one for your business.

Sure a lot of people visit Facebook to socialize with their friends, but out of those who visit, how many people actually open up their wallet and spend money on Facebook.

Facebook is a good place to test and see what happens--it may just work out good for your particular business, but like most marketers and businesses, Google still provides the best results as far as actually making them money.

WEB 2.0 is huge. Interactivity and real time data is huge. We are moving towards a more communal and instantly interactive world. Whatever the platform is (facebook, twitter, whatever is next) the trend is the same.

Its really exciting if you ask me.

Oh, and mobile interactivity will be ginormous in the near future. I'd (and have) put money on it.

I think facebook could be one of the best places to advertise. People are really dumb to not be taking advantage of fan pages and trying to create some sort of buzz on there.

Facebook is already one of the best places to advertise. It's a lot more cheaper than adwords and the traffic is more targeted.

I know that a lot of the gurus have told everyone that Facebook is one of the best places to advertise, but have you actually tried it for yourself?

It is a good place to advertise "IF" you're making money from it, but just because the advertising per click is cheaper doesn't automatically result in more sales for you.

Not a knock on any guru, but remember, the gurus were the first to plant the Facebook is the next big thing idea in the minds of their list followers, but also remember that they do have to keep coming up with something to sell you in order to keep making money themselves, so why not do a Facebook product?

It certainly sounds like it would make sense to advertise there because a lot of people do go there, but the only way to really know is to actually try it for yourself instead of just repeating what others have come up with.

Testing is the only real way to know for sure. If Facebook turns out to provide you with better results then by all means use the heck out of it. But from the many that I've talked with and from tests I've done myself, Google still gives me the best results as far as profits....I really wished Facebook would give me more results because my cost per click would be cheaper.

The difference I think is that when people go to Google, they are looking for information or a solution to a problem and we're right there to provide the web surfer with information and the solution. However with Facebook, the primary reason people go there is to socialize with their friends and network. Looking for answers to a problem isn't their main purpose for being there. If you happen to get one to bite on a subject they've shown interest in then that's great.

Social networking and Search engines are two different things. They all serve different purpose.

The only thing is, they seem to have some similarities.

  • Interesting thread. While I do think that Google is still at the helm when it comes to controlling the consumer's wallet today as an "information network", I think the true power of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn is in leverage of one's own "personal network". Imagine the power behind asking a question or posing a problem and receiving an immediate answer from people that you know and trust instantly - almost like your own personal search engine or problem solver. The power of such a network grows exponentially as you add more friends/followers to your own network.

I can't see that it matters. It doesn't seem to me that Google and Facebook are really competing. They each have different purposes, and I suspect that the same people are using both.

I think Facebook and Google are catering to different audiences. Think about how you use the two, definitely not for the same purpose. I think both can be used to market your product/service, but Facebook still has a ways to go before they can offer the effectiveness that Google does. People use google to find a product or service, where as facebook is mostly used to connect socially with friends/family.

Myself...I go there to socialize....when someone sends an ad, I usually drop them as a friend...unless I know them personally.

If I were to advertise there, it would have to done a lot differently. First, I'd have to find out if they are even interested in making money online. If they were, I'd have to give them a free program to use to make money, and later I'd try selling them a new product. This would take a long time to do. I'm not sure I want to spend that much time cultivating a sell

    Just my opinion....

Facebook will never take over Google. Purely and simply because their set-up (search engine versus social networking site) is entirely different.
Having said that, Facebook is huge and becoming immensely important for IM. 10 times more than Twitter. Master a tiny part of Facebook's massive membership-base and only the sky is the limit.

Ya know, a friend and I were just discussing how apparent the shift from no ads to ads made facebook seem less valuable (yes I know they're making money, by value I don't mean money). A lot of people, especially students, who it was originally made for, get annoyed by ads and have trained themselves to avoid them.

I think with facebook, depending on your target audience, you have to be cautious of the approach you take, you don't want to come off as an advertiser, is some user's eyes, you're destroying the value of facebook.
