Take a look...do you see anything wrong with this:

This is a sign that was erected about 40 miles from me. The only word spelled correctly is exit.

There's a lack of professionalism everywhere, it seems. If you want to set yourself apart from a good many online businesses all you need to do show a little professionalism.
  • Proofread
  • Spell check
  • Make sure your links work
  • Respect other people's time
  • Use real words, u r not in a chat room
Act the part of a professional if you want to be respected as one.

I just got called to supper while I was writing the list. What would you add to it?

It is a sign of the times, also a testament to the fact that the U.S. has been in a dumbing down process for qute a few years now.

    Dennis,
R u going report to HD for - spelling ?

Yep cell phones have ruined people to the point where they cannot even talk any longer because all they want to do is SMS. They are too lazy to type and have a real conversation. Not too mention 80% of the schools in this country pass students up no matter what their grades are.

I am sure we all know people with a diploma and they cannot even read..

It is not the cell phones which have destroyed spelling, it is the computers. No one believes they need to spell correctly any longer because we have this wonderful thing called "Spell Checker".

The problem becomes when you almost spell a word right. I commonly type "your" instead of "you" or insert other words in place of what I really meant, when I'm typing full speed chasing a thought. Without proofreading, they would just fly right on through, because they are spelled properly.

The computer is both a great tool for productivity, and an evil tool to make us dumber.

Dennis, I assume your "respect people's time" equates to provide real value, actual content, rather than key word stuffed garbage. If not, you can add that one to your list.

Wow... you're pretty old school. You just said 'supper'.

You get credit for that one, KD, and it's a good one. I was referring to people who, for example, ask for help and then can't be bothered to even say thank you once you help them.

      Stuff like that.

Old school...yeah, I guess in many ways I am, but I'm old enough to have earned it.

Not sure if it's old school or more a Midwest thing though.

      Good observation, Lee.

The list isn't growing very fast. Surely there's more to presenting yourself as a professional than I listed. Who else can contribute?

Don't put down your competition. You should be able to emphasize the benefits of your product without slinging mud at your competitors.

Don't insult your customer's intelligence with fake scarcity tactics or other deceptive practices.

Don't email your list with a long, whiny rant about how [insert company here] screwed you and how much you hate them.

Spell checkers are to blame. I think they're making people lazier and less able to recognize mis-spellings.

Not only did they missed them when the made the sign, they missed them when they put the sign up as well. It took a citizen to point out the flaws.

Seriously? I mean I certainly agree that there is a time for professionalism, such as when printing road signs to display directions on a highway LOL, but I mean I personally feel like I can, and will talk/type however I see fit and I don't feel like I should have to worry about being possibly critiqued on it just because people have different beliefs. Anyway no harm meant so hopefully you wont take it that way, just noticed the thread and thought I'd drop my 2 cents while passing through.

No offense taken. You're free to do as you please. If it turns out you aren't making a lot of money, but would like to, you might want to reconsider your choice. Everyone that I know that earns their living from IM strives for a measure of professionalism. After all, it is a business.
