Checking stats thought I'd throw out some interesting numbers

posted a 728 x 90 top coke vs pepsi vote now banner for a zip submit to get a $100 gift car on 11/19/2009

Since then
586,282 impressions
324 clicks
1 action

for $1.20

I have tried literally dozens of different banners over the last couple of year, seen millions of impressions, and my income from this banner spot is probably under $20....

Do banners work for anyone?

Wow - thanks for sharing your stats.

I think banners work best when the customer is already 'pre-sold' on a product or service and then they 'look' for the banner ad to take the action they already decided to take.

Otherwise, I think you are correct - people have Banner Ad Blindness. I've clicked on some banner ads, but only because I was already pre-sold on the product. I haven't had as many impressions, or clicks, and except for the sweepstakes banners (which did pretty good) I too have had little action.

you can see the banner now at the SF site in my sig....

Man, I have tried EVERYTHING in that spot!

That friggin site gets 1500+ visitors a day, 3,000+ page views and I'm lucky to break $400 a month on it!

It was the first site I ever built, used it to teach myself to code, been online for a decade now. I've tried about everythig to monetize the traffic with about zero success.

Only money I really make is selling homepage links for $50 a month and another 50 - 100 from Amazon... depressing

the problem with banner blindness literally comes from things looking like banners, often higher contrast blocks that standout as different from the true content of the site.

If you have the ability to know where your banner's are to be placed try and integrate it to look more like the site content, you should see improved results, or at least more people 'seeing' your banner.

There's a short article about it on my blog in my sig fwiw

Do a survey with your visitors and find out as much as you can about them. What interests them, motivates them etc. Once you have them figured out, see if you can find a suitable product to promote that's relevant to the reason most people visit your site. If they are wannabe authors then promote an author course or something.

Then dump the banners that the affiliates give you, make your own. Don't worry about it looking nice and colourful, definitely don't animate it - think like a copywriter and simply turn the banner into attention grabbing text with a reason to click.

That's about the best you can get out of any site that relies on banners and clicks. Some sites just don't attract buyers. But if you're getting a few hundred dollars per month then I'm pretty confident you can at least double or tripple that, your layout is far from optimised. Every page needs relevant ads and offers, keep them high on the page. I personally don't find the amazon widgets and banners to convert. When I promote amazon, I make my own banners for individual products and try to make them as relevant to each page as possible. The difference in conversions are huge.

Hope that gives you some ideas.

    1) banners need to "blend" in
    2) they shouldn't really be animated..

    try this:

Good advice all - thanks. You've given me some ideas!

I will say it's handy having a PR 5 site to link from for my other efforts, though I'm very careful not to abuse it!

As far as knowing my users, I know them inside and out. They are science fiction, fantasy and horror geeks of both genders between the ages of 20 - 40 and they are the cheapest *******s on the face of the earth. Since they are geeks, they tend to be much more technically savvy than most, hence the difficulty I've had in doing marketing on the site. They come to read reviews and participate in the forum and that's it.

If they read a of a review of a book and they want to get it, about 20% of the time they'll use my Amazon link. I'm at $47 for the month so far at amazon, includin any 'extras' they pick up when they go to get the book.

I figured all I need to do is sell 30,000 books a month at an average 50 cents or so a book and I'm golden! That means I only need to increase sales by about 28,000 a month!

consider doing targeted incentivized zip/email submits.. e.g.

"Bruce Campbell, Sam Raimi, WITHIN THE WOODS superior quality final release!"

incentivized zip-submit leads (after completion) to amazon's offer of whoever-released-evil-dead-with-that-****-as-bonus-material.
