Any Interesting Suggestions for Moving Beyond Ebay?

My wife runs a fairly successful business selling clothing on the German Ebay. She's been doing this for the past 9 years. These days, competition (especially from Chinese sellers) is getting ridiculous and I want to help her out by finding another avenue for monetization. She takes ownership of her inventory (no dropshipping) so I thought I might just throw up an online store and SEO the heck out of it.

Is this still the best way to sell online?

Can anyone recommend any good, easy, intuitive store software or platform we can run on our domain? (I have an old copy of Niche Blueprint that I could use but it's not very elegant).

Any other interesting ideas for selling a boatload of clothing in either US or German markets? (Ebay is highway robbery; their fees are deceptively steep).

Anyway, I know this is a pretty general post. Hope no one minds.

I have been a powerseller on stealbay for 4 years and you are right after ebay and paypal fees there is not much left.
That being said: eBay drives the traffic right to your door and that's what it's all about ebay or IM, getting visitors.

Starting your own ecommerce site has it's own problems:
    (1) getting buyers to find you.
    (2) getting buyers to trust you.
people are skiddish these days, they tend not to buy from sites that are not established or have good ratings.

Other powersellers who left ebay have had success with Yahoo stores and Amazon, once again there are fees involved but mabey it's worth a look.
    Anyway Good Luck

    ALSO:
You may also want to look at ebays wholesale section (don't know if it's still going) you can sell lot size items to other sellers, also liquidation.com and other liquidation auction sites where you can sell bulk lots of your inventory. (When you say boatload of clothing, i assume means you have a lot)
