The Secret Of Internet Marketing That Isn't A Secret

Dear warrior marketing friends,

I've learned a lesson this last couple of weeks, since a brief reread of a course (see PS) that helped me to get focused on results...

Some say "the money is in the list"...

I'd agree. In fact I'd SAY I'd agree. You see, I've had a list of several K of prospects SITTING DORMANT for two years all the time fearing that if I send them an email ... the sky might fall on my head or something...like Chicken Licken out of Aesops Fables....

Here's the lesson I've learned (from David Vallieres and I quote virtually). People join your list, or buy products from you because they like what you offer to them. Harsh fact! They don't LIKE You (well not neccessarily) and they DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU (again in general). They care about themselves, how they can fill their emptiness and how they can end their pain and confusion. Here is the first lesson then.

Lesson One I learned this past few weeks: GET OVER IT. People act out online all the time. I have some experience and limited success marketing online. I still do this though sometimes, even I've done it on this forum (buying posting a link to a sales page- more on that later) then picked up a RESENTMENT when my post got moved. People on your list will send hate mail to you from time to time quite possibly. Daft as a hapeth as one of my old teachers used to say to one of my friends.

People do INSANE things online. We live in a CRAZY CYBERSPACE when we're internet marketing. Let me give you an example of something you may have heard of...

There is a webcam product that allows you to join a community of webcammers. There is a premium upgrade for this software which allows you to view as many as 100 webcams at one time. People in a certain country have become ADDICTED to this product. It has created a new culture. Some of the women of this country are supplementing their incomes by sexualising themselves for FANS they have created through the CULTURE that has emerged as a result of the user base of the site. Get this (don't think I'm advocating this because I am not...it is a topic of PhD research for a friend of mine in my city)...some fans are willing to buy VIRTUAL GIFTS, like a "FIRE CROWN" for the "angels" in these communities which cost up to £10,000 a pop! And what's more, this particular example is of a DEVELOPING COUNTRY...so, cyberspace can be INSANE and people ACT OUT. Don't take it personally, especially if its someone on your list you don't even know. I used to do this (not the webcam thing!!!) - take it personally-- and it is better to just delete people who are a nuisance.

Do you want to be in an email relationship with your list because you want to be friends or want to do business?

If your list aren't warming up to you (I probably receive hate mail from 1 lone subscriber about once or twice per campaign) THEY SHOULDN'T BE ON YOUR LIST, don't take it personally, delete the email, do not respond, forget about them, pray about them, just DON'T let them live rent free in your head (like I have done before this time).

Lesson Two: BUILD YOUR LIST.

A list starts with a single email address of a contact or customer and goes from there. If you sell a product on ebay, they can go on your list. If you get a sign up to your site, of course, they are on your list. If you sell something from your site they go on your list. Soon you'll have a targeted list of subscribers who you can repeatedly sell to. Build your list.

You can build your list by marketing intelligently and appropriately on forums. You can put a link to your sign up page in your sig (I've put THREE! but I'm greedy ) You can write articles to gain traffic, write press releases, upload videos to tubemogul, JV with other marketers and many other ways to build your list...lots of things. Ebay is quite good because your list PAY YOU for joining in a way...

The point is that a list can start with a SINGLE EMAIL and goes from there...

Lesson 3. If you have an email list, EMAIL THEM REGULARLY with QUALITY OFFERS.

This is what I discovered to cut a long story short (some internet marketers will be sitting sarcastically clapping and saying "well done" at this juncture!!)...here's why though...

BY EMAILING YOUR LIST YOU CAN HAVE A "FULL TIME INCOME" SITTING ON YOUR BUM IN FRONT OF YOUR COMPUTER DOING WHAT YOU LIKE WITH THE REST OF THE TIME.

I have been emailing about 500 prospects and in the LAST TWO WEEKS (these were a list that had grown VERY COLD by my not emailing them (see above)...I've created a FULL TIME LIVING (well almost) for my wife who I've taught the process of sending an email through an autoresponder and is coming out of being a FT MUM (in other words one of my daughters is going to school soon)...

For goodness sakes, don't do what I did and leave your list to ROT while you wallow around doing sweet FA with AUTORESPONDER PHOBIA. Go see your banker, open a business account and start writing quality emails and advocating quality products, preferably which you use yourself and send these emails preferably THRICE PER WEEK OR MORE to your double optin list.

I hope learning from my failings can be of help to you in your online business let's just recap briefly.

1) GET OVER IT. Get over that people ACT OUT online. Some people do so INSANELY. This can be to your benefit or detriment. You choose. I'd let go of the misery-guts's who give you any reason to delete their emails. Simply "DELETE" you need no negativity in your business. And forgive yourself for your own acting out as well. I have some experience online, and I acted out as soon as I joined this forum by advertising a product. This is the MONKEY acting out. I'll post an article by a friend on the CHIMP MIND later, you'll understand what I mean (and love it, too)...

2) BUILD YOUR LIST. From now on, every prospect, enquiry and sale to your business goes on your list. If you're worried about anti-spam laws or double opt in requirements, send a courtesy email politely letting them know you're putting them on your list and is that ok? I've NEVER received a negative from doing that. Some people on your list will become REPEAT BUYERS over the years. You won't know them, except perhaps their name and email, and they won't know you. Some of your customers might become friends, some might be "business friends" and some will remain anonymous REPEAT PURCHASERS. Mystery buyers who for some reason LOVE WHAT YOU OFFER THEM. This is a fine class of customer. Sometimes they are GOLD to your list. Find them now.

3) For goodness sake MARKET TO YOUR LIST. Don't make a fancy wancy pantsy ezine that is info only all the time (unless you don't want to make money). Create great offers and advocate the products of others to your list and start making money AS SOON AS YOU HAVE EVEN ONE SUBSCRIBER ON YOUR LIST. Don't worry what they think, just SELL to the people that MATTER to your list- the one's who are going to enjoy your recommendations and help your business to grow.

I hope you can learn from some of my failings, once again. It could change your life, it is changing mine.

Your friend,

Sam B
Internet Marketer

PS I just wanted to thank David Vallieres for the ideas and inspiration for this post (especially about letting go of the whiners which is used almost verbatim from what I learned in the You CAN Make A Living Online course, which came out about 6 years ago and is still top notch.
