Do you inspire confidence in your customers?

The past couple of weeks I've received a few great lessons on marketing and salesmanship from the "real world".

My husband and I are having a new roof put on our house, and we called a few roofing contractors to get quotes.

The first two guys that came were young, maybe in their mid-20's. They were nice guys but seemed kind of non-chalant and relaxed about the whole thing, like we asked them to cut our lawn for $20. They gave vague answers to my questions, and their "quote" consisted of a few scrawled lines on a sheet of notebook paper. The price we got from them was the highest of all the contractors: $12,500

If I had to come up with a company slogan for them based on our interaction, it would be: Just give us the money and we'll slap something up there for ya!

The next contractor was a bit older and seemed more professional at first glance. But the more I talked with him, the more I got the distinct impression that he liked to cut corners as much as possible.

He started by saying that he didn't have to strip off the first layer of roofing, and that would save us 50% of the cost. This immediately raised a red flag in my mind because the roof on our house is 35 years old and extremely worn. In many areas, the plywood is warped and damaged and needs to be replaced. Yet this guy is willing to just "cover up" the problem with a new layer of shingles? That turned me off immediately.

And like the first two guys, this guy also left many of my questions unanswered, or tried to discourage me from having things done by saying, "OHHHHH no, that would cost a LOT of money, that's a LOT of work, you don't want to have that done..." In other words, HE didn't want to put in that much effort. His quote: $9,000

His company slogan: I will give you the fastest and cheapest roof you've ever had!

Next up was a man who obviously had an issue dealing with women. LOL :-)) Whenever I would ask a question, he would direct the answer to my husband. I mean, he wouldn't even LOOK at me! He seemed to think that home improvement projects only take place in Man World - No Women Allowed. In addition he seemed to be in a hurry to get out of there while we talked to him, like we were taking up his valuable time. His quote: $8,000

His slogan: Don't waste my time, especially if you are a woman.

Last but not least, we had one additional quote done.

Now pay close attention to the differences here:

This guy was probably between 40-50 years old, and has been in the roofing and remodeling business for 20+ years. He was organized, punctual, and professional. He knew exactly what he was talking about, and answered my questions directly. He even answered a few questions I had BEFORE I had a chance to ask them!

His quote was extremely detailed and also included a few extra things that the other companies didn't, like cleaning out our gutters and cutting some bigger vents in the overhang all around the house.

Everything about his attitude and demeanor suggested that he was a professional all the way. He also insisted that he needed to rip off the first layer of roofing because some of the plywood was damaged and it needed to be replaced. (THANK YOU! Someone who actually cares about quality!) He also said that since our roof was so worn and definitely needs to be replaced before it gets damaged much further, he would make our job a high priority and get it done within 2 weeks from the time we sign the contract. His quote: $9,850

Slogan: Professional, fast, high-quality work at fair prices.

Can you guess which company got our business?

I should also mention that this last company also had another bonus on their side: SOCIAL PROOF

Just a few months ago they replaced the roof on my brother's house, and he had nothing but good things to say about them. They showed up and did the work when they were supposed to, did a fantastic job, and completely cleaned up after themselves when they were done. But even without that personal endorsement I still would have been most impressed by them simply because of the way the owner conducted himself.

===========================

This whole experience has made me think twice about my business. How do my customers really see me? Am I inspiring confidence in them? Do I answer their questions before they ask them? Am I REALLY focused on serving their needs, or do I sometimes get too focused on convincing them that I have what they want?

It's not always about offering the lowest price or piling on a bunch of bonuses to increase the perceived value of your offer. It's about inspiring confidence in your customers that you (and your products) can meet their needs.

If you can do that successfully, you'll have no shortage of customers that are happy to give you their business!

    Hi Wendy,

I recently had my roof fixed and had a similar experience... Also made me
realize that many contractors (and marketers) are completely out of touch
    with their potential customers.

    All the best,

Isn't it amazing that they can stay in business, Francois? I mean, I wasn't expecting them to do cartwheels for me or anything, but at least give me the impression that you CARE about providing a good product!

        Hey Wendy,

        Good analogy....

There are chancers in every industry and they get away with sloppy
behaviour and poor customer service because so few people call
        them out on it.

Let's face it....if more people complained and gave constructive
feedback, the penny would begin to drop for many of these operators.

The other issue is that lots of Internet marketers are looking
for the "marketing holy grail", when in fact many lessons can
be learnt from your day to day experiences....

        Regards

        Greg

Greg, so true! When you see it in a different context, and especially from a customer point of view, you see what's really important in sales, no matter what you're selling!

    Wendy,

I totally agree with you, especially about "cutting corners" in any business.

At the end of the day, that sort of slapdash approach doesn't pay off.

A good attitude and a quality job, well done, is the best way to guarantee repeat business.

    Dave.

      Thanks Dave!

Maybe you've hit the nail on the head right there - are these guys just focused on the initial sale, not caring whether they get any repeat business or referrals from us? It sure seemed like it.

How many times are you going to have a roof replaced? Every few weeks?

It seems obvious to me that these guys aren't salespeople - they probably all could do the work, but that's a different skill from selling.

The guy who offered to cut corners is probably used to dealing with customers who want to save money... I find it interesting that you seem upset that he offered a lower-cost option. Option as in your choice.

Around here, half the people who do any type of home repair or improvement services don't even show up when they are supposed to come out to give an estimate. Explain that one.

I'm sure a lot of this is because there are only so many people in one area who can do that type of work, so if most or all of them are hard to deal with, it doesn't really hurt them, since who else are you going to turn to?

Chris, no, I'd like our roof to last at least 30 years -- but these companies do remodeling and other services too. That's what I was referring to with the repeat business. Not to mention referrals! Word of mouth referrals are powerful. You would think they'd want to get more of those. Unfortunately, just from the first impressions I got from these guys I wouldn't feel comfortable referring them to anyone else. Maybe they don't care about that, but it seems like they should.

I wasn't upset that the contractor offered a lower-cost option. I was turned off that he wanted to sacrifice quality to save a few bucks (which I never asked for and definitely did not want). If you could see the condition of our roof, you'd see why I insist that the old layer of roofing be torn off and plywood replaced before the new roof is put on.

Maybe some people wouldn't mind a hack job on their home if it would save them a few bucks, but want quality and I'm willing to pay for it! This is literally the roof over our heads and I want it to be leak proof and stable for as long as possible. Call me crazy if you want. LOL :-)

We wanted a new conservatory building

we knew exactly what we wanted and each company I rang I told them to come, measure up for what we wanted and give us a quote. (No hard sell)

One company insisted that both myself and hubby were present when they came. When I told em it was just me, they got quite upset and insisted he be there.

Guess who got told to shove their quote up their ass

    Very weird marketing indeed,

Lol... We had a guy selling Sky Plus come to our house last week, I was in the bath and June answered the door.

She told him I was in the bath and that we weren't interested. He ignored her and asked if I was coming.

So I did, and he left with a flea in his ear!

        Dave.

Wow Dave, your wife is nicer than I am! I think I would have told him to stick it. Or maybe just told him, "sure, my husband will be with you shortly" and then left him standing outside until he got the point and left. LOL Maybe rudeness works on some of their prospective customers so they think it will work on everyone?

Contractors! I've had my fill of dealing with them. I think only a small percentage of them have any business sense. Most of them just want a job, get paid, work until 3:00 PM , and drink beer.

Its funny how almost all of them think price is the only factor.

LOL! Scott, it's so funny you mention beer. A few days ago we also called a tree guy to come out and give us a quote on having some trees taken down and brush removed from the yard.

He showed up DRUNK! Except he smelled like vodka instead of beer. :-) I could NOT believe he would show up to give us a quote like that. Does he also drink while he's cutting down 50 foot tall trees? Since these trees stand only 20 feet from our house, I think we'll go with someone who is sober. LOL (although, if a tree crashed down on the house, we'd be able to get much more than a new roof! lmao!)

when availing of products or services, i used to look for the cheapest quote. but i realized, cheapest is not what's important. what's important is the quality of service/product that a supplier can render.

but sometimes, it really depends on the person that you deal with. even if you are trying to save some bucks, you may just be awed by how the marketer sells their products/serivces to you... without you knowing it.

Great observation and nice comparison Wendy.

I like the way you raise your idea to all the contractors in compare to our business. This would probably help many warriors to have and get an idea how to inspire our clients and customers.
