Do I have to pay taxes if I wrote for several different clients but made under 600 for each of them?

hi I'm not sure but I heard that if you wrote for an single employer and earned over 600 you had to file a 1099 for that employer. However, if you write for several different people still making a lot of money for maybe a month or two but not 600 with any single client, do you still have to claim that?

You have heard it a bit backwards.

If you are paid over $600 as an independent contractor, then the person or business who pays you has to provide you with a 1099MISC with the income reported in box 7.

But, no matter how much or how little they pay you - it must be reported as income. Example: if you make $500 total from 7 different sources. None of them are required to furnish you with a 1099MISC, but you still must report all income from all sources.

Thank you for providing the exact answer I was going to send. It's amazing how many people get this little tax rule backwards.

The purpose is to eliminate some of the burden from the employer, not to allow people to not report all their income.

Bottom line - ALL income MUST be reported.

Are you in the US? If so, go to:

    Internal Revenue Service

You'll find official answers there, including answers to your question above. You can even call them if you have follow up questions.

Or, as Derrick said, talk to a qualified professional.

    Cheers,
