A different sort of article writing tip...

We see lots of tips on getting articles published, how to link them and how to optimize them for the search engines. These are really useful but how often do we hear about writing content?

If you're just after backlinks then anything that gets published will do. But if you're looking to pull readers, get them interested in whatever you're promoting and make them click through to your site you need to work hard on content.

Too many article writers think that all they need to do is rehash some basic info in their niche. But who wants to read the same old things over and over again? Let's look at weight loss, for example. How many times have you read about cutting down on saturated fats, sugars, and processed foods? Nobody wants to read this again. Yet this stuff keeps getting published hundreds of times a day.

Always think about something unique that you can contribute. Okay, sometimes this can be difficult, especially with something as hotly researched as weight loss. So what I often use is what I call the "contrarian" approach.

Take a well-known and widely-believed "fact" about your topic and challenge it. Be controversial. People love this. Take the weight-loss example again:

"Did you know that low-fat diets are actually unhealthy? Since the low-fat craze started people are turning up with all sorts of nutritional deficiences as a result of low-fat diets. What's more, low-fat dairy products actually contain more cholesterol than whole dairy, which makes it harder, not easier, to lose weight."

If you give it some thought you can come up with a challenge or contentious angle on just about any topic. Being contrarian and controversial is one of the best ways to stir up interest in your readers. It's probably the most important reason why I'm able to actually presell readers and lure them to my site to make sales, rather than just writing for backlinks.

There's some good stuff here, read and learn people.

I'm fed up of seeing obviously spun articles appear on hubpages. Fortunately they disappear quite quickly.

Write quality content and you'll attract quality readers.

P.S. Being controversial - now that DOES work.

      like your "contrarian" approach.
this will keep me busy for at least 2 days hehehe!

I agree that getting reader is a different story than just posting on a blog... follower/reader may be better than just a visitor in my idea..

      thanks for sharing.

I have written so many articles for one of my websites, and sometimes I feel as if I have nothing else to write about.

Thanks for this tip, this should help me to write more articles easily.

        Thanks!

      DavidO,

Thanks for posting this. I am a complete newbie and would prefer to write my own articles rather than outsource, but just can't seem to figure out how to get started because I'm scared of the exact things that you mentioned. I do want my content to be original but get hung up on the research part of it. How do you find quality research and not just rehash the same old stuff if you're writing in a niche you know nothing about - without wasting 3 months on just researching your topic?

Excellent! The best articles get your wheels turning. They stand out from the background noise of conformity. I love the contrarian angle. Put your thinking cap on and you'll think of several other angles to approach your subject matter so your writing stands out. I wish more online writers would step outside the box and learn to color outside the lines. The web would be so much more interesting.

Hi David - This is a great thread, because it is something often not talked about. I agree with the above posters that Controversy is a great thing. I personally like to have a balance of outsourcing and also writing my own articles. This way I can better control that content that goes out there. My experience has been that the shorter, more concise, and more controversial the article is - the most exposure it will generate for you.

What you dont want to do is write the same generic articles that everyone else has. This will not get you very far. Instead add controversial, fresh, and relevant content and watch your article marketing campaign increase in effectiveness.

    Hope this helps,

    Kris

    Now this, is kickass.

I have done an experience with this before and if you write different and promote better, your article will go viral and you will get thousand of visitors.

    David,

did you know that writing about this is could be unhealthy for your WF social life?

This type of approach could have a negative effect on your ability to get along with people here that use the other type of articles you mention and that could stir some...

    Just trying it out

This is actually a great tip and one that I have used from time to time. An interesting side-effect, so to speak, is that it can get your articles ranked well in the SE's, too. I believe this is because, while on topic, it is vastly different than what a high percentage of the articles on the same topic are.

Sorry if I'm not making any sense. I've been up forever and am typing with my right hand in a brace.

Being Controversial With Your Articles Does NOT Work!

    Just taking the contrary approach.

Seriously though, it's a good approach to be controverrsial (as long as you can validate what you are saying) and if your post helps to stop people regurgitating the same old trashy articles then here's to you.

    Shhhhssshh!!!!

Some of my most successful articles and videos were contrariwise opinions of poker pros. It also helped that I named those pros in the title and content as well.

I guess you let the cat out of the bag.

Let's have a few controversial themes for us all to build on. (Thanks, by the way, DavidO, for "Did you know that low-fat diets are actually unhealthy?"). How about these for starters?

IVF treatment can actually harm your chances of having a baby
Health enhancing, disease preventing treatments may be bad for you (who wants to live to 100 anyway?)
The banking bailouts have ruined the US/UK/"name your country"
It's impossible to make any money in Forex
Having big muscles is bad for attracting women
Having big breasts is bad for attracting men
What's wrong with a few wrinkles anyway?
Acne treatments result in a worse complexion
Free trade leads to subsistence wages and economic slavery
Most of what you read every day (especially on the internet?) is lies
    Celibacy is an unnatural state

Who's next to add to these?
