Just two weeks ago I got into the offline niche. I have dedicated the last two weeks to talking to as many business owners as possible. It has been a great experience and I have already picked up two clients this week and have about 4-5 appointments next week. These are high quality clients like attorneys, insurance agents, mortgage brokers, etc. I have three state farm agents that want to meet me next week along with a magician and DUI lawyer. I can't even keep track of all the leads/contacts I have made. It is really amazing and the best part of it all is what happened Thurs.

I was talking to some President of a College or something. Didn't really give it a thought because I have gotten really good at explaining what I do in only two weeks. We were also on a equal level and I talk to people as though they are my friends even though they may be really important. After talking with him for about 30 mins in a social setting you could tell he was really impressed with what I knew and then he said "I want you to be the marketing professor at my college". I was shocked and thought maybe the guy was just talking like a big shot. So I was like OK I would be interested in that, but I am really busy with my business right now.

So the next day he sends me an email saying "I really want to bring you next week for a quick chalk and talk with my staff. If all goes well we will bring you on." I couldn't believe it and it was incredible thinking I went from nothing to being offered a position at a college in less than two weeks. So I have to send over my transcripts from my Masters Degree, resume and the application. His secretary will be contacting me early next week for the appointment. All I can say is just go out there and DO IT. Talk to as many people as possible and gain the confidence and leverage to nail big clients everyday.

I don't even know if I will accept the position because my business is really starting to take off and I have a goal of 100 clients in 6 months. I want to acheive this goal because it will give me about $50,000 a month in residual income as well. I have so many great stories of how I leveraged my skill and talent that it is crazy. People are starting to chase me and contact me and it has only be a few weeks.

JUST DO IT!!!!!

It is all about leveraging your position and coming across as the number 1 expert in your industry. Just make sure you exactly what you are talking about because I ran across someone else the other day that knew his stuff inside and out, but I impressed him enough that he wants to use my services to save him time.

I just say "okay thanks' and head on to the next call... there are always gonna be people who can intimidate with their own knowledge... no biggie those arent the guys we are looking for, we are looking for the guys who dont know and need us. I wouldnt waste my breath usually on those... but you got him anyway so "cool". That happens sometimes too.

I will go into detail more about what I am doing to get these people in front on me in a little bit. I have a bunch of work to do right now, but I really wanted to motivate people to take action. I am not rich yet, but I think it is only a matter of time since there is so much stuff in my pipeline right now and I just started.

Right now I am pitching them SEO services and Local Business Results. Of course I am also teaching them on how we can covert that traffic and also capture info/email marketing.

I am getting on average 30 business cards a day from owners who I talk face to face with. I had to put my wife on the email marketing follow-up program just to try and keep up with it.

    Hey RocketGuy,

Nice action taking, congrats with your first successes in this..

What things do you say or do that positions you as the #1 expert in this industry?

And are you just talking about Internet Marketing with these clients or are you talking about Marketing in general and how it can benefit them?

Thanks for the added motivation dude!

I guess because I have been in the industry for a while now and knowing a lot about SEO and Internet Marketing positions me as an expert. I am only talking to them about Internet Marketing because that is my passion in life. I do ask them what they are currently doing for marketing and many of them say flyers, referrals and word of mouth.

Wishing you success and a little pointer for you.

What's more attractive than the number of years are the results you might have mentioned you've got from what you do.

In reality, none of our clients give a hoot about process. They couldn't care whether today it's called SEO and tomorrow its referred to as SEM. What they do care about are results.

If you've been getting the level of success you mentioned, I can probably guarantee that it's because of the results you've mentioned more than anything else.

      Now the Pointers

I want you to know that I truly believe you'll succeed due to your attitude which comes across in your write-up, so take the following suggestions as a few words to help you eliminate challenges down the road.
      1. Have a Plan - Without a plan you can't determine how much progress you're making and when to 'up the ante' so as to speak. Your plan can be for 90 days (the best), 60 or 30 days at a minimum
      2. Be Visible - You want people to come to you as as opposed to having to chase after new business every month. Being visible will do that for you. There are tons of ways to do that and you can get lots of pointers from the posts in this forum alone (and that's why having a plan will help because it's dead easy to get distracted).
      3. Interest - I won't talk about generating interest because you seem to be doing fine in that area right now. The only suggestion I can give is that you should have a good pre-qualification process in place that allows you to decide, with a high level of accuracy, whether or not the local business owner is a good fit for what you do or not.

Warm leads are easier (not 'no-brainers' and always a done deal) to call up and get confirmed appointments with. Sounds simple but too many people chase after cold leads to this day!
      4. Conversion - Get really good at converting qualified leads into business projects that are either 12, 9, 6 or 3 months at a minimum. Anything less and there's not enough time to get undeniable and sustainable results for the business.

Anyone can setup an email list system for local businesses, however, an influx of names onto their email list in the next 24 hours or even the next week doesn't mean they're successful yet. It just means they've got names on a list.
      5. Referrals - Get great at getting referrals because this is the key to never having to feel like you're begging for business, no matter the state of the economy.
A lot of information and it's because I believe you'll be successful because you're taking action and it would be heart-warming to read more about your success in the weeks and months to come.

      Have a great one.

      Bayo

Great story of taking action and getting results Rocketguy!

It's the same thing I've been telling my members too, and its the reality of doing offline marketing: Just get out there!

At the end of the day, no money will be made until a conversation is had...either with you or your B2B sales reps

Look forward to hearing about how things go!

Good for you - and great advice from Bayo.

It's important to put your business plan in place as there will be some clients that you DON'T want.

If that shocks you then it's even more important that I said it.

I know it's easy to get swept up in the excitement and money and think you have to sell something to everyone, but it's also easy to forget that your goal is to be able to make a real difference and make them money, not just take it from them.

I know you may also be able to avoid much accountability and just show activity and some of them will be happy, but as Bayo said - RESULTS are what will ultimately make or break your reputation and your business.

A lot of people will tell you to baffle them with jargon and just convince them it needs to be done, but if you want real success it's important that you focus on achieving goals for them - new customers, extra revenue - whatever, but something that helps their business and not just stuff that looks good.

This will ensure that they rave about you and get also get to charge top dollar - because you get results where most people just talk a good game.

Good luck with it - It is great fun and very rewarding when you help people successfully.

Great tips guys. I have 3 appointments tomorrow so hopefully I will land some more deals. I am super busy all week and I have only been doing this a couple weeks. I think the potential for this business is huge, but you need to figure out unique ways to get in front of as many business owners as possible.

        Offline isn't too difficult.

        Here are 2 rules.

        1. Don't do anything yourself.
        2. Conduct it like an orchestra.

I hire my sales staff based 100% on commission and give them bonuses they LOVE! IE: First person to make 4 sales in 45 days gets a vacation to Mexico for a week. My Dad won it (yes, I hired my dad - but he's been doing direct sales for decades) and he took my mom. The trip cost me $1400 and from the 4 sales he brought in it made $22,000 in revenue (about 14k profit).

Put an ad up online saying you're hiring. When people apply for the job and justify why they'd be great at sales tell them they're not qualified for the job. If they start to qualify themselves again and push harder, you have a winner. If they give up in the interview, they'll give up in the sale.

        2. Outsource everything. Don't do keyword research yourself. Hire someone overseas who will do it for $5 an hr. Hire staff. Your time is too valuable.

        3. Automate everything.

        oDesk.com is your friend

        Cheers

    Congratulations on your successes!

You are right. The potential is really beyond imagining. There are SO MANY business owners who really need what we have to offer.

Once you can demonstrate what they stand to gain, it really makes little sense for them not to hire you. It's even better when the numbers show that you will be "free" (because they'll make way more than you'll cost).

Any one that has been hanging around IM for over 6 months has the knowledge to blow away most local business owners. Most of them may be very good at what they do but they know nothing (generally) about marketing... either on-line of off.

With a well thought out presentation, and allowing the local client to tell you what each piece of his marketing that you have pointed out is lacking is worth if fixed and you only charge usually 10-20% of that; you will make a mint.

The nice part is most of the 'work' is done in the 1st 60-90 days, after that it is maintenance and takes no time at all, yet the local business owner pays a monthly maintenance fee. That starts as a (Year)contract and then goes month to month. Usually they don't ever want it to end because with what you have learned in the last 6 months or 6 years, you are light years ahead of not just him/her but most 'SEO' companies out there.

Most got some sort of 'marketing degree' 2-20 years ago and have done little continuing education IF any!

You can make a difference to the point that with-in 90 days the business is making more than they were before the recession (and when they wouldn't give you the time of day).
Just don't do what the 'competition' does...

-stay informed, keep coming to forums like this, keep you fingers on the 'pulse of the net'
    -continue educating yourself this way.
-when changes happen, and they do every week, you will adjust and keep the ball you started rolling and know how to start a few more.
-don't go it alone, hook up with a group to run stuff by and learn from them when they run stuff by
-over-deliver...give them the wow factor on top of the money increases. Run a search an the biz, do 1000 back-links and 6 months later run another. That's a wow factor for ya! That is also the kind of thing that even if it doen't put a lot of money in his pocket, he can see and since the money IS coming, must have been you. You won't ever lose that businesses business, even after the recession.

I actually saw a contract that listed as part of their 'package' optimizing the meta keywords and description. Not a word about off site optimization, no back links, no social media, nothing that the people here KNOW how to do. The worst part, call their plumbing office, it rings 5 times before someone picks it up and says, "Hello." by 5 rings 80% have already hung up. After "Hello." half of them say they got the wrong number. Imagine if they just serviced the clients they already had? If you taught how to answer the phone and how to up/down and cross sell, you'll add 20-40% in 30 days. And that doesn't count doing anything on-line yet! (or the other 4 things they are not doing or not doing right)

Get the in the Google 7 pac (Mario has a kick butt WSO on it) and a few other things you do everyday for a tenth the price anyway.

Secret? plan the work, work the plan. Take action and even if you screw the 1st couple of interviews up (most don't) each time you'll get better. 10 clients at 1500/mo after 5k upfront. You do the math. After the recession is over, you'll probably keep the monthlies as long as you live for a small amount of time keeping your fingers in the game, but once Joe the plumber is flush(pun intended), he will go back to not giving some hot shot IM boy the time of day. (You'll still get a few, but the game will get harder) You got a couple years at least. Make the most of it and develop a 'following that will never leave.' Do it right! over deliver, stay current with the net, monitor their off line marketing. Selling a 97 ebook is a buch of fun, but going out to an interview and coming home with a 5k check is a whole lot more fun...and easier too. Just don't screw the guy over, do the right thing and give him value for his money. Don't get greedy and you will be unstoppable.

I got to go to bed

      Right on all points.

Although I've yet to walk away with a 5k one yet.

Awesome thread, and congrats to you!

As you said, you just got to get out there and do it! People that haven't done this stuff read through this and think "wow that's cool but I couldn't do this", and they are wrong! I know because I thought the same thing.

When I started I charged a smaller amount, thinking it would be crazy to charge four figures a month to one company but now I got that too And I'm a huge help to the company to boot!

The NEED is out there folks and very real. You just need to be out there. I also liked the point someone made that if you get out there and blow your first interview, so what? There are SO many fish out there, you just need to get out there and start trying.

      Outsource it all!

People think it's this big production to outsource and that it's a HUGE deal... but really, they don't get paid until you get paid. 100% commission, provided you hire motivated, savvy employees is a near flawless system.

Reward them REALLY well and recognize achievements and they'll do just fine. Give them leads to follow up with, and all the tools they need to do their job.

I have been so so busy. Working like 14 hours a day right now. I landed two new clients yesterday for a total of $2500. One of them pays me an additional $300 a month. The other one paid up front for some website work. Got another client that is suppose to meet me on Friday with a $1400 check.

It is all happening so fast and I have so much stuff in my pipeline right now it is crazy. Got a lot of people that are wanting to meet with me. Now I just need to perform well so I will get a lot of referrals as well.

I go in for an teaching presentation at the college on Friday. They want me to present and teach for 15 minutes in front of a board of professors. I chose the topic of Internet Marketing/SEO so it should go well.

In this post you mention you are targetting people already on Google - i'm assuming you mean companies that are ranking in the lower pages.

Another good prospect is to target companies that are using PPC. They already know the benefits of SEM.

I have been involved in the offline niche now for 16 months and my business has moved forward in leaps and bounds. My main concentration now is in conducting buisness seminars and has been for the last 12 months.

Offline companies can spend a lot of money on traditional advertising methods so if you approach them and say that you can reach more targeted customers, build a subscriber list, make their business seem more professional etc then they are willing to pay you great money.

One thing though, you seem to be having a lot of fun being your own boss and making good money so why on earth would you want to take the job as a professor?

Who cares if it looks good on a resume lol

Activity truly does breed success... Getting out there and talking to business owners will do a few things for you...

    1. Increases your confidence level - You'll get real confidence that you don't get from studying ebooks.

    2. You'll learn how to talk to business owners - Spending time talking with business owners is the best way to "learn" this business.

    3. You'll fill up your pipeline and inevitably make sales/money.

The more you talk to people, the better and more comfortable you'll get with it... Even if you're a completely awful sales person, if you make enough contacts, you'll find someone that has a problem that you can solve... and you'll be paid to solve that problem...

I think sometimes we make this thing far too hard...

    Congrats on impressing them

That's a tough call. It sure would look good on your credentials. You could create products and stuff on here, and be known as a professor

On the other hand, I understand not wanting to have that big of a committment. This working from home thing is pretty darn cool.

Im going to quit doing sites and start a local directory that sells one page listings for 19.95 per month. That way hou can close them on the phone with a credit card and dont have to go out to their business... going for volume and backend residual money.

Thanks for the inspiration here guys. This thread was a great read!

I have been a salesguy for a number of years, and have studied marketing both online and offline because of it. Bought a lot of guru courses... you know the drill.

Anyways, I watched Kevin Wilke's presentation about offline marketing and knew it would be a great fit for my skill-set and knowledge... "stumbled" into the Warrior Forum, and this was one of the first posts I read - THANKS! What an inspiration.

I have been needing a change, and am very stoked about this consulting - something I never knew even existed a month ago.

Looking forward to being a member of this board.

    Loving the positive vibe here.

If you had a great presentation that is a sign you can move that skill to video and may be create a video product/presentation for fellow IMers moving towards offline. There you go there is another income stream set for you and you will actually be providing real value hence helping others get in the game.

    All the Best mate.

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know that I have been super busy in the last couple weeks and haven't had any time to devote to the forums. I am averaging about 2-4 new clients per week which is great.

I can get the clients all day long with my techniques, but I think the biggest challenge will be to deliver on the promises and results. So the key for me next is to start outsourcing as much as possible so that I can continue to get more clients without the quality suffering.

I took the big teacher exam last week and passed it with flying colors. So they offered my the marketing position, but I honestly don't know if I want it. I guess the only good it will do is for my resume.

How are you getting in front of the business owners? Are you coming across interference with gatekeepers?

Over the years many people have asked me "do you do websites" - and that's from a very very small group of people. I think the local offline market is way under-served and is certainly in my business plan.

Brick-and-motor people have no clue about online marketing at all but it's getting into their conscious. I met with a friend and with the info I've learned over 1+ years they said I told them the exact same thing that "professional consultants" are charging 20k a year for.

Helping my local business community keep jobs and compete - that's pretty sweet and personally fulfilling.

      Very true.

Most internet marketers here grossly undervalue their knowledge and their services.

A huge part of this is simply realizing what that your advice and services can be worth tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to a business.

If you help a business make an extra $50 a week in profits that comes to:

      $2,600 a year
      $7,800 over 3 years
      $26,000 over 10 years

If you work with a business that has higher transaction values (say a realtor) and help them make an extra $2,000 a month those figures get huge quickly:

      $2,000 a month
      $24,000 a year
      $72,000 over 3 years
      $240,000 over 10 years

Many of the services you set up keep on giving for years and years to come with minimal extra input (good SEO is an example).

So the services you provide can be exceptionally valuable.

      Kindest regards,
      Andrew Cavanagh

Getting in touch with these Business Owners who NEED you has always been the greatest ways to start creating that actual business and it can all be as easy as just collecting offers.

I would agree that everything must be planned so everything will be targeted in its effective areas and there's nothing to lose.

Here's a great read too that I found regarding partnership marketing:
