How I overcame fear of failure...

Hi guys,

I see that many people have fear of failure. I know exactly how it feels because fearing failure had me paralyzed for a long time. Below are some "mindsets" that have helped me overcome this fear:

- Failure is just a PART OF THE PROCESS. Failure and success are two sides of the SAME coin. Without one, we wouldn't have a concept for the other. If you "fail" at something but you learned from it, you just SUCCEEDED in becoming "smarter" and more experienced.

- There's no real failure. There are only test results. You try something and it either works or it doesn't (or it works "semi-well"). After that, you evaluate those results and you see what you could have done differently. Get in the habit of doing that constantly. Always improve your approach. This is "Kaizen" or continuous small improvements that add up to huge results over time.

*** What to do now so you can move forward: ***

1) ACCEPT that failure is part of doing business and part of trying your hand at challenging things. You WILL fail at some point (I do all the time). And that's TOTALLY OK. Relax! Those who never fail are those who watch the game from the sidelines and never try anything challenging.

2) Rather than asking the question "How do I avoid failure?" ask yourself: "How can I fail AS MUCH, as QUICKLY and as CHEAPLY as possible?" Don't create a 100-page ebook that will take months to complete and may fail in the end. Instead, create a 500-word article out of your best ideas and test THAT. If people react favorably to that, THEN you can go on with your project. Test your IDEAS. Do NOT test your entire "project."

Even after you read the above and they make sense to you, you may STILL feel paralyzed. One reason may be that you have developed the habit of inactivity and inertia. Keep feeding your mind with positive messages. Most importantly, take ONE, small, TINY step towards your goals TODAY. This is the best way to "rewire" your brain. Over time, you'll build momentum.

I'd be interested to know how you approach fear of failure and what has helped you with it...

I overcame the fear of failure when I realized not getting started because of fear IS failure.

    Hi George,

Yeah you are absolutely right about that failure is just a part of the process. And I think that if someone is FEARING the failure, that they internally focus on the wrong things, on everything that can go wrong, they create pictures or movies of them.. failing and experiencing the pain/humiliation/dissapointment..

There is a quote ''A coward dies a thousand times, a couragous one only once''.. (or something like that)

Successful people always SEE themselves succeeed, they make movies and pictures in their head of them succeeding. And usually they prepare a back up plan for when it fails! So making the backup plan alone takes a gigantic portion of your fear away, and making the succeeding movies and pictures in your head creates confidence and motivation.

Time and time again I see that mindset and your inner psychology is *everrrrrything*!

    Greetings,

    Ribas Irable

One good technique of overcoming FEAR of anything for that matter is knowledge. We FEAR what we don't know. If most people knew the guy behind the mask horror movies would no longer sell. Just ask yourself what is it that you don't know about what you are doing, your business for that matter. That thing you don't know is what is causing you to FEAR, and ultimately keeping in dark. Once you know it IGNORANCE gives way to boldness and courage and ultimately = SUCCESS!

I'm always afraid of failing. I'm new to this and have yet to make a single sale. But I'm not giving up because I believe this will work for me. There are so many people making money on the internet that its almost impossible not to succeed if you keep trying. Focus on whats in front of you and keep you eyes on the prize.

Thanks for the useful post! Failure is a stepping stone to success. If you're scared to fail, you don't take any action. And no action = no progress. There are always useful lessons to learn from failure which you can use to build your success.

I'm big on failing fast forward too.

I think it's because at this point in my career as a
business man, I understand how it works and use
    it to my advantage.

For most people, the last MAJOR time they had to
fail alot was when they were kids...

learning to tie shoes or ride a bike.

Funny...than, we were DETERMINED to fail and just
enjoy the process (and get it over with).

As kids, there was no doubt in our minds we could
do something because everyday you would see kids
    riding their bike.

    We were dedicated.

But the dedication -- over the years, is driven out
by fear of going against' the teachers rules or going
to school to be taught to "obey" and avoid failure.

    (because failure means FIRED).

I should know...I've had almost 13 jobs - and the
fear of failure is driven out by the job and school
    system.

Takes courage to get your balls back and up
riding on that bike again until eventually you can
    ride with "no hands"

  • you only fail, if you are on the right track. Because you are taking actions. Some of those actions work, some don't. You can only avoid failure if you fear from failure and not take any action. And, that will result with nothing.

You overcome your fear by facing it, thus, failing. It's no rocket science.

Great post George!...I don't think there is such things as failure...If at first you don't succeed and all that. Quitters fail, successful people soldier on until they find something that works.

Grit, determination, and an unbelieveable desire to win.

Believe in your dreams and never give up.

    Beth :-)

It seems to me that fear of failure is one way to make sure you fail. You may not win, but put everything you have into it and try to succeed. And don't give up just because you don't succeed immediately. Keep working. Keep learning. Eventually, you will find the way to make it.

I had a think about the concept of "fear of failure" and concluded I have the opposite - a "fear of success" which has prevented me being "out there" for quite a while now .... I only just realised that! Think I will have to ponder it some more!
