Traffic not what I expected

Well, I finally got a number 2 on google for a keyword that google keyword tool says gets over 300 searches a day. I'm getting one visitor a day from it.

Maybe all those searches are from other people in the same niche checking their rankings all the time? Bummer

Never trust one keyword research tool...always check atleast 3 different tools.

I use seobook, wordtracker, and google keyword tool and sometimes another one or two.

      Brad,

What you are probably seeing is a Personalized SERP where Google is doing you a 'favor' by showing you your own website.

This is very common these days. The first time I saw I ranked #2 for a keyphrase I didn't even optimize for I got suspicious, and sure enough, it was Google doing me a favor.

Bottom line...don't check your keywords through your own browser. Use a proxy or other software to do the checking.

      They changed the game...

        Bill,

No, I made sure I turned that off. I logged out of my google account and then clicked on web history at the top right of the google page and disabled that too.

I took your advice though and just checked it through a proxy. I'm really number two. Kind of disappointing.

I know what you mean though. I got fooled by that a couple of times in the past when they first starting doing that with the history.

        Thanks,

        Brad

The KeywordToolExternal tool is based on Adwords results and includes all the partner sites as well, so while that keyword may well be getting 300 searches a day they are not all related to the SERPS.

It's interesting too how many of the vendors of the tools that scrape these results seldom mention this fact.

For a sanity check you can use the Search-based keyword tool . Notice how the results differ wildly and yet are both from the same source.

If the two are within an order of magnitude I usually consider that adequate.

Absolutely like said. I use several different keyword tools since you know who owns the tool and the pay per clicks.
