HOW TO: Switch Aweber prospects to buyers list when they buy affiliate product.

Ok...

So, say you're an affiliate marketer and you'd like to have two lists. A list of buyers, and a list of prospects.

  • Prospects come from your squeeze pages and go to your prospect list.
  • Buyers are people that have bought something (pretty obvious).

When a prospect buys something from one of your affiliate links, you want them to move to the "buyer" list so you can send them slightly different marketing emails.

This is how I go about that... there might be more efficient ways, but I don't know them (so if you do, please share).

Note: This technique takes someone from List A and removes them when they sign up to List B. If they fail to sign up to List B, they're still on List A. So, you never drop a prospect.

Preface: In Aweber, you can't just automatically add someone to a list. They have to opt in... Period. You CAN, however, set up a rule between two lists that says "when subscriber opts in to List B (buyers), they are automatically removed from List A (prospect)". More info on how to do that can be found here: Can I Move Subscribers From One List to Another? :: AWeber Knowledge Base This means you've got to get them to subscribe AGAIN somehow.

Here's the way I do that.
Step 1. I set up a "buyer bonus" squeeze page. It's got 3 fields:
  • Name
  • Email
  • Clickbank Transaction Number
Step 2. I figure out a clever bonus that buyers get for purchasing whatever affiliate product I'm pitching. Say it's a photography product on clickbank... I come up with a video bonus for them or something. This is DIFFERENT than the freebie that you gave them to opt in originally. Make this super tasty (and related to your affiliate product) and it will help you sell products too. If your bonus is worth the cost of the affiliate product, a lot of time people will buy specifically for the bonus.

Step 3. I run a PROMOTION to my prospect list. I tell my list that they have a chance to get my bonus if they purchase product X (my affiliate product) through my affiliate link. In that email I include a link to my buyer bonus page that I created in step 1 (not a straight affiliate link, that created tons of support issues of people emailing me trying to get their bonus.)

  • On my buyer bonus page, I have the opt in form, and also an affiliate link for the product that I'm pitching.
  • I also have instructions for the prospect. Go through my link (link opens in a new window), make their purchase, find their transaction ID, then tell them to close that window and come back and fill out form with their ID to claim their bonus.
Step 4. When they fill out that form Aweber automatically sends them a confirmation email. In that email, I thank them for their purchase, and tell them to click the confirmation link to claim their bonus.

Step 5. They click confirmation link in email and get their bonus. This signs them up to my "Buyer list" which automatically unsubscribes them from my "prospect list". Now they start the buyer autoresponder sequence.

  • At this point you're wondering how I authenticate the transaction with clickbank and make sure people aren't just typing in random numbers... Well, I don't. But I DO make the clickbank transaction ID field required, and I don't seem to have a problem with forgeries. And even if I do, it's not THAT big of a deal since I was giving away the bonus anyway.. I still got a subscriber out of it.
  • If you wanted to manually send out bonuses to confirmed transaction ID's, just send them to a thank you page when they click the confirmation link and tell them you'll rush their bonus out as soon as you get the purchase confirmation from clickbank or something. Then cross reference with your CB account and email it out. I personally find that's a waste of time.

So, that's how I do it. I hope it helps someone out.

    OK,

Not sure about your process, but with the lists you have the automation set up that will unsubscribe from one list when they are added to another.

Pick the prospects list, then go to web settings => automation and you will see the drop down with the options there.

I think that's what you are asking.

    Thanks,

    John

Hey John, thanks for the input. I wasn't asking how to do it, though. I posted a reference link on how to do it in Aweber in the OP. I was posting a How To on getting prospects that become buyers to opt into your buyer list so that you can market to them differently.

  • This is all you need to segregate your buyers from your prospects: CBListAutomator: Automated List Builder and Bonus Delivery System (not an aff link, I am just a happy user)
