Alright I caught it right when they were doing it from the looks of things as only the front page of the site was altered, nothing else and it was only 1 site out of like 20...Hostgator is fixing it as we speak.

Anyways.

Can anyone suggest another virus cleaner? McAfee says nothing on my system but I need to make sure.

For free, AVG; for a price, Panda.

If you want to use a free one then go with AVG. I had good experience with
    them.

Well the hacker was a dumb one apparently. Screwed up the install of the script so they restored the site no issues and all is good. I have malware and adware and spyware programs I use regularly so I am good on those LOL.

Avast is the only one I'll ever use. I knew the instant I was attacked while others weren't even aware there was anything wrong. It works on algorithms rather on reverse engineering of viruses.

However - you are talking a website not your computer here and there is a big difference. You need a security minded host. Some of them send out false signals to deflect bots that signal in on certain programs so that they can't "see" them. Some monitor 24/7. Others just tell you it's your own problem. Servage is an excellent host for website security. Of course, no site is 100% safe, but if you have a good host, they will at least minimize your risks. You also need to change your ftp passwords often. A lot of the new viruses use ftp to infiltrate your site. I prefer downloading direct into my cpanel rather than using ftp. Also make sure there are no unauthorized ftp permissions set. Passwords are a hassle but they serve a function.

On your own computer - get the dcomabobalator and turn your dcom off. It serves no purpose other than to allow viruses and worms, rootkits etc in through the backdoor.
Download SOPHOS anti root kit and scan for root-kits frequently.
XP anti-spy will turn off functions built in to your xp programs that allow spying, etc. complements of the makers of your OS.

Maleware bits will keep the maleware out.

And lastly avast will scream like a banshe any time you wander near a virus. Works real well with COMODO firewall - and you do want a firewall - turn off the macaffee firewall and put up COMODO or Zone Alert - both are good.

Crap Cleaner will dump cookies, etc that harbor viruses and maleware and if you use that daily you dump a lot of stuff that can otherwise sit around long enough to spread to other programs.

Then pray. Because there's nothing that will stop some of this stuff out there now if it really wants into your computer and websites.

Is Avast the best paid virus scanner?

I've only ever used free virus scanners and I figure it's probably time I get a paid one.

These are what I use, and an additional online scanner for small files to be 100% safe.

    1. Microsoft Security Essentials
    2. Spybot Search & Destroy
    3. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    4. SUPERAntiSpyware

    Online Scanner: Virustotal

Officially confused newbie here. I thought the OP was about having one's website hacked into and altered. The host was working on cleaning up the issue.

Then there was a comment about keeping one's computer clean of viruses. This seems to be the comment that received responses, right?

Are these issues somehow connected? If so, how does the virus protection on my computer impact whether or not my websites get hacked? Or are the comments on this thread simply addressing one issue and not the hacking issue? Huge thanks for any clarification offered.

Thanks for the response Dave 147. HeySal's post did clarify for me that there are 2 separate issues going on in this thread. Much appreciated!

Sorry to hear you had to go through that. I know of people that have had REALLY bad hacking incidents, and to no surprise they were hosted with hostgator as well. It seems to me that hackers can easily fool their security system. Anyhow as for recommendations, I have to agree with Shaun here. I use 1, 2 and 4 PLUS CCLeaner. Microsoft Security Essentials is for Windows XP and beyond, but works very well. It continues to check your PC in the background while you work. And if any sort of threat gets near they immediately detect it. As for spybot and ccleaner, I use both and they work great. And they are all free. You can make a small donation through paypal if you so wish.

THe reason I asked for a virus program is that they said I needed to ensure I checked my computer as it was the ftp I use that was the point of entry to the site.

I already have all sorts of programs loaded on my computer LOL to help prevent this sort of stuff. Only second time in 10 years so I'm doing pretty good LOL. (First was about 6 weeks after I started IM)

Will check out your suggestions HeySal. I already use CCleaner, Ad-aware, AVG and McAfee on the computer.

Macaffee is probably your problem. It's one of the ones that is generally used by the average computer owners. If you were writing a virus, which software would you test it against? Also - Macaffee doesn't run on algorithms. They get copies of the viruses and reverse engineer them. By the time they can protect against it, you are had. Avast runs on algorithms so it know just by the way a program acts that it's deadly. Avast will tell you immediately if you have an ftp injection virus.

Also - someone said pay for Avast? Avast is free for the home version. It's the commercial version that costs.

Turn off your dcom Sylvia. It has no use but lets crap like that in a backdoor - just google "dcomabobalator" I might have spelled it wrong, but google will know what you mean.
