That is the question. Has there been any proven research when it comes to something like this? Will a .net or .org deter someone when they are looking at sites? I believe .info and the rest of the crap are the ones to be VERY wary of. Thoughts?
#net #org

I made an experiment before with the following

      domain.info
      domain.org
      domain.biz
      domain.net
      domain.blogspot.com
      domain.co.cc

All domains were on wordpress except of course with blogger. All have the same carbon copy content, same promotion for 2 weeks (forum postings, sb, articles).....

The result was shocking after a month... in order..

      domain.blogspot.com
      domain.co.cc
      domain.net
      domain.org
      domain.biz
      domain.info

blogspot and co.cc are both established subdomains and I didn't wonder why.... info is just a waste of time... just my 2 cents based on experiment....
Congrats on you for testing this out, this is interesting. Nice to see the blogspot rank, I can't even get blogger to rank high even though google owns it. Same with wetpaint, as it seems the extra extensions don't have much validity.

      Is co.cc free too?

Just out of curiosity since same content which did you ping, bookmark first etc.?

That may be nothing more than the order the search engine found and indexed the domains.

Google "craft ideas" and you'll see it's a competitive niche, and a .info site ranks #1. I don't think the search engines care. The only drawback is the perception some people have, and that can be overcome with quality content in many cases.

From preference as visual standpoint I prefer .com then .net then .org

They are all top level in search engines so get what you can of them. These are my preferences.

Some KW's I see .com & .org taken but .net available which I like.

Usually .com is the favourite and .net can be just as good these are the prefered 2 main options these days. What i usually try and do is by both at the same time to stop competition.

Yup i also prefer .com over .net & .org .....since it is the standard #1 domain. If you're using the domain for an established business, it may be worth the expense.

    Thanks,
    Alexa

Im not sure very hard to choose. I dont think any have an advantage in terms of SE rankings

.NET seems like .COM's reject brother but it looks more "businessy" than a .ORG
.ORG seems more quality like but more of a organisation/non profit site.

So I'm not too sure which one I like best

From the point of SEO, it is obvious that .org extension is a better choice if you want to gaina better ranking. Usually, this kind of domain name extension is helpful to SEO.

I do not see how the extension of a domain name can be of such importance other than if is is Country orientated

Of course this type of question is going to garner a million different answers, and most are valid.

I always go for a .com if I can get it, and I usually can simply by adding a word to the end of my chosen keyword phrase - so if my keyword phrase was homebrewingbeer but the .com was taken, I'd try homebrewingbeerinfo.com, homebrewingbeersite.com, homebrewingbeerguide.com...you get the idea. This almost always gets me a .com.

If I can't get a .com, then for anything health-related I'll go for the .org and anything else, the .net.

If it's not a .com, .net or .org, I don't buy it.

The idea I got is that you're making me thirsty. Lucky for you I have a beer in the box or I'd have to come over and drink yours.

To clarify my earlier point, .com is best because of the common perception people have, but I don't think it matters one whit from a SEO standpoint.

Interesting how results vary. My experience has taught me to ignore .biz, but .info seems OK, but not as good as .com, .net and .org.

I think it really depends on both the content and the objective.

If the objective is SEO and catching newbies, then .com is always the best and in my experience, .org tends to do better than .net.

However, if you are using it to market a product, either your own or as an affiliate I would argue that it doesn't really matter.

Would you really question the extension if a top tier IM was offering their bonus on:
    listcontrolbonus.info, listcontrolbonus.ws or listcontrolbonus.com.us? I doubt it.

Likewise from my experience the website content rather than the domain name is the major influencer of your adwords quality score and cpc.

So, unless you are buying a domain for SEO or to make an authoritative impression on new visitors, I wouldn't worry too much about the extension.

FWIW, if you need something to rank highly quickly, Totoy's results run true. I find that my content on Blogspot, Blogger, HubPages and WordPress gets indexed and ranked much faster than a new domain, however, the effect is only short term. If you harvest the link juice from the hosted blogs, you will find that your own blog ranks higher over the longer term.

It depends on what you are trying to achieve.

Are you looking to create a mini site which ranks in the serps for a fairly easy keyword?

Are you looking to create a large authority site which ranks for competitive terms?

Or are you looking to create a website in which you are looking to build a brand around?

In my opinion, it doesn't matter. The most important is how many backlinks do you have?

I don't think it matters if it is a .NET or a .ORG domain. The only thing that matters is the quality of your content and backlinks.
