Will Internet Marketing change once the Recession is over?

The economy in the US and in most places around the world seems to be doing better than last year. However, here in the US, the unemployment rate is still around 10% - and if you include those out of the work force - ~17%. Wall St. is doing well, but Main street is still struggling. The average person is still holding a tight grip on their wallet.

Some of us are still growing our business, but I think it's safe to say that things are not back to normal yet.

So, my question is - overall, how will Internet Marketing change once the recession is over?

- Will conversion rates improve?
- Will people buy more products and services?
- Will people have more money to spend on advertising?
- Will there be less people looking for work at home opportunities?

How will these things affect the state of Internet Marketing - in your opinion?

From what I have seen, the recession has been evident online as well as offline. Conversion rates tend to be a little lower for sales, Adsense earnings are a little lower due to decreased advertising budgets, etc. And, I do expect slow but steady improvement as the world economy begins to regain some momentum.

I also believe that with the continued transition from brick & mortar stores to more online shopping, there are even more opportunities for growth in IM, in areas that may still be untapped by current marketers.

I look forward to hearing what others are experiencing in their own businesses, and what their expectations are, as well.

If you were in a niche that helped people do restaurant-cloned meals at home, you might see a dip in sales.

(My point is, it depends on the niche. MMO might take a small hit, but opportunities will open up in more consumer-based areas.)

Yeah, I can relate to what you're saying. I see it in my own revenue. But the thing is, is it a good idea for the US economy to recover and go back to its unsustainable old ways? Around 70% of the economy is built on consumer spending. The consumer, in general, is broke. As you mentioned, unemployment is high.

Where was all the money coming from during the boom times?

    - home equity loans
    - credit cards

There's no real savings rate in the US, and the government has been printing money out the wazoo. I don't know if there are any people from Argentina on this forum, but maybe they can talk about what life was like in the early 2000's. I dunno Ron, the recession seems far from over, and more like the real trouble is just beginning.

On the positive side, there's a ton of money out there to be made online. No way am I trying to imply anything different. But from an economic standpoint, the US might be in for a long hard slog ahead.

I should also mention in response to my own comment here that I've noticed that there's a lot of revenue (in my own business) coming from entertainment type stuff. What's weird, I'm plowing a lot of my disposable income into select stocks that are all about entertainment. WWE is one of those stocks, it even yields over 8%! And yeah, I watch wresting... I think it's funny and entertaining. I also like oil stocks (CVX is my favorite of the group).

Good question Ron, I think its the perfect storm right now for those who sell Internet Education products like myself. When....if...the recession ends soon and more people get those dreaded JOB's, I think it will slow down for those selling Internet Info Products.

I really think that some people will continue to work at home if their Im business is successful. I personally know that if I make a enough money at home that I wouldn't go back to a traditional job. I really like working at home because to me it's less stressful.

When is a recession really over? I mean there's highs and lows, but the dollar slowly declines over the long run.

I think fewer people will be looking for MMO stuff, but I don't think sellers will be affected too much. No matter the economic situation, people are always going to look for ways to make money online, lose weight in the most efficient way, get out of debt, and learn how to find or improve their relationships.

Recession or not, though, Internet Marketing will always evolve. Those in this for the long haul will constantly learn how to roll with the punches.

I think although more people may get back into full time jobs, there will always be people who have the hope and dream of one day working for themselves, escaping the rat race etc.

What it may mean hopefully, is as far as the MMO online niche goes, people may have a little more time and money to invest on their business ventures, rather than desperately buying "systems" with their last dollars.

As far as other niches go, I think people will always have relationship, weight, odd bodily fuctions regardless of recession, and will always look for solutions.

Maybe a bit more money for consumers to spend, coupled with the FTC clearing some of the "dirt" from our industry, and better products for customers (hopefully), may bring a healthy dawn for business.

You mean there is a recession ?? Does not effect me one bit.. Things are more expensive then they was several years ago but still does not effect me as me income is still the same and some months even more than what is once was..

Guess we will all have to wait for that One World Power and One World Currency before some of us really start seeing some kind of effect....

I think that...if anything, internet marketing will explode once the recession is over. I also think that internet marketing has not even reached it's "teenage" years yet.

I think recession creates a category of displaced people who are looking to change their careers. When people start to spend money again those people may accelerate their quest for a new way of life in the short term.

So I see work from home as a strong category in and out of recession.

As far as other niches go, many of my products rely on disposable income. Those will convert better after the "recession" is over

    Of course it will.

But not because of the recession, or the end of "recession".. just because internet marketing is a living, breathing, ever changing medium..

It will change before the end of the recession, after the recession and probably a thousand times before and into the next "recession".

    Peace

I understand your question Ron, but you are assuming that this recession will end. Maybe it already has and the 10-17% unemployment is now the equilibriated base-line. It was, after all, government meddling with lending practices, especially in the home mortgage sector, that brought about the collapse of many of the big investment banks to begin with. The government is not done meddling. More damage is yet to be done.

But with the explosion of information that is out there, there are huge opportunities for those who can make sense of it and present niche info to the masses in a way that is easy to comprehend. We here at the WF are essentially in the information business. I think that's the place to be in the decades ahead.

Believe so because of 3 reasons: (1) more money to spend due to more stable financial security, (2) more entrepreneurs due to more people forced on their own to establish businesses ue to currently lower employment opportunities and less stable employment security and (3) more time for leisure/pleasure because of 1 and 2.

Think more people will be looking for ways to: (1) augment current income from making money online, (2) establish businesses, (3) work at home and (4) establish online business presence.

Reasons are: (1) fast and wide sharing of relevant information, (2) more people wanting to secure their own financial stability and growth, (3) outsourcing and (4) more entrepreneurs.

    Hey Ron,

    Interesting post.
    In my opinion:

    - Will conversion rates improve? Yes
    - Will people buy more products and services? Yes
    - Will people have more money to spend on advertising? Yes
    - Will there be less people looking for work at home opportunities? No

I believe more and more people will continue to look for work at home opportunities throughout the world, and I don't see this slowing down anytime soon.

Let's think for a moment... Someone has more money, and less time... they need to buy gifts, shoes, a new football jersey, and a new PlayStation 4. I would guess they might just sit down at their PC and go shopping.

Will the Make Money niches suffer, maybe, but probably not....my line would be "Now that the economy is recovering, people have more money to spend, It is the Perfect Time to Launch Your Online Career"

I'll bet Amazon, Ebay, and every other product oriented internet marketing company is thrilled by every positive change in the economy.
