Something Every Article Marketer Should Do Once a Week

Here's a short video about something I try to do once a week or so to keep my article title and body writing skills honed. It doesn't take long, but I think the payoff over time can be very lucrative for anyone who writes a lot of articles and/or web content. I probably spend about 20 minutes a week on this. Let me know what you think.

    Hey John,

Thanks for the vid, I tend to look in those sections as well.

Not sure about you, but sometimes you see some great "golden nuggets" there, other times it just seems too unbelievable that someone has legitimately go that number of views in a short period of time, when you can't see any signs of a ranked keyword.

    Just my $0.02...

Good stuff. It's something that I've done now and again but I never thought of putting into my weekly routine.

I used to do that a long time ago when I was first writing and submitting articles, for some reason I stopped doing the recon...this was a good reminder to get back and check out what other people are doing.

    Another good tip John. Thanks.

Of course, you have more time now that your Cardinals are no longer "dancing" :p

How cruel! Why you gotta be a hater? I think our WF band is about to break up. But then in 5 years we'll have a reunion tour and bank big $$$.

I've thoroughly confused everyone now. Thanks, Matt.

They were made for walkin', right? Besides, you're famous now. Auction 'em at Ebay and retire young.

It's all good in theory but when using one of the most abused websites in current History it is not possible to use it as a prime example!

Of course there are people who abuse EZA, but that's exactly why you do this on a consistent basis, not one-off. You definitely pick up good ideas if you go through the process once a week or so. Trends emerge, especially in the articles that get published the most. It's a good way to learn how to write articles that other webmasters like to use on their own pages, which gives you a backlink as long as they follow the rules. Nothing is 100%. You should know that.

Great idea. I have submitted more than 13 articles over the last 2 years but never thought of going back and checking the suggested categories.

Huh...feeling a little stupid But then again I do occassionally read the top authors' articles at articlebase and that has been a real education.

I need to make this a routine which you rightfully stress.

    Thanks John,

I would agree that the "Most Published Articles" are probably of better quality, as the "Most Viewed" can be easily manipulated.

Although marketers write a lot of what shows up as "Most Viewed", so you probably would getter keyword ideas from those, imho of course.

I was just starting to do this except I never thought of looking at the most published as a tool. Thanks for a great idea.
I was also trying to figure out what's going on with this guy's articles - August Lanz Yes I know I just created a backlink for him.

What I wanted to know was how he managed to get 4 articles (the ones I checked) all submitted on the same day have about the same number of views in lockstep every day. Approximately 1200 views one day and then 1400 the next and so on. Is it all keywords? I checked for backlinks and the only ones that show up are from the other articles in those three sections on the bottom of the page. The links from his resource box are to a review site for three CB products and I didn't see if he was building a list from that page.

    Any other clues I'm missing?

P.S. - His stats also says he has only 9 Active articles, resulting in 21,094 views. Wow!

There are some bla.ckhat tricks some authors use to boost their article views. Junk traffic. This is exactly why I recommend not looking at the articles in just one or two categories. Look in the lesser used categories - the ones that aren't that popular. They typically will not be getting abused as much. I'm not saying that the author you mentioned is doing anything like this, but that is the pattern you see a lot when people are buying traffic to boost their views.

Update - This person now has his link redirected to one of those fake blogs made to look like a news site that the offline media have been talking about. It looks like a blog with fake comments and now the comments are closed because of spam - YR!

I now tend to believe you that he is gaming EZA's - by whatever means - to get article views just to get into the most viewed list to propagate more views.

That's a good tip. There are many simple way such as this one to get more out of your article marketing, but people tend to focus on the bigger picture and forget the smaller details. The information you just gave away is valuable, thanks for sharing.

Let me add something that people can do to find out how legit the article
      views are.

** WARNING ** This takes time.

      1. Pick out a top viewed article.

      2. Follow the resource box to the domain being promoted.

      3. Look up the domain at SpyFu to see what kind of money is being spent
on advertising. If you see a substantial budget, check the keywords and
then do a search at Google for these keywords and look at the paid ads to
see if you can find that domain.

      4. Don't click on the ads, but write down the domain, go to it and take
a look at the page. See if there are any links being directed to the article
      that are bogus.

What I mean by bogus is something like this.

      <See Britney Spears Hooters>

And the link, when clicked, takes the person to an article on acne or
      whatever.

This is just one of many tricks people use to pump up their views.

Also, check to see what position their article actually falls in on Google's
      pages.

If the article is on page 1, first position, there is a good chance that the
article actually does get many views.

Check the keyword tool to see how many monthly searches their are for
      the selected keywords.

Like I said, this takes time, but if you want to find out the probable
legitimacy of article views, this method sometimes brings up some
      interesting results.

Great advice! Those 2 categories of articles have been on my radar but I wasn't sure what to do with them beyond keyword research.

Great video John, is this basically the same concept that you did your WSO on article marketing on?

Just wondering because I wanted to check out your WSO if it is something different than what you shared with this video.

No, this is not something I get into in that WSO. This is more about fine-tuning your article writing skills by seeing what other authors are doing to get a lot of views and to get published a lot. That WSO you're talking about is more or less completely about article marketing (and not writing).

I'll have something coming out soon that does get just into how to write better articles, but that's still in the works. I made this video because I realized I'd never really shared this tactic with anyone. And I really do this about once a week because it can teach you some great things about how to improve your articles to get more results.
