Promoting An Artist's Site

This is my first big job that I'm doing from the ground up. I want to be sure I've hit all the bases. The site is done, unfortunately it's under the artist's name so need to get a more SEO friendly domain for his work.

I will need to do some on page SEO, though my knowledge is somewhat limited. Working on that.

This is obviously a physical product. The artist wants to get more traffic to the new site (current alexa rank 3M+). He does NOT want to do PPC.

I have suggested:

press release
free ads
build backlinks
bring blog current
get SEO friendly domain
keyword research (me)
article marketing

I wondered about forum posting - haven't done my research yet for this genre of art but there seems to be a forum for everything.

Any suggestions for helping my first big client would be most appreciated. I've been at this so long with small results and I feel like this may finally be where I can land and do much better!

Thank you!!

      Robin,

Stumble the website. I've stumbled sites and have gotten literally thousands of visitors within minutes.

Youtube, Facebook, forums, anywhere and everywhere where you can post a link to the site will help. It's not a total solution but it's a start!

Thanks for the reminder Nick. There's just so many things to remember that the seeming small things slip by!

With artists another source of traffic comes from twitter and facebook.

Remember to keyword optimize the graphics of their artwork so it will show up in on google image search.

This is the difficult bit, promoting a site. I think you've just about covered everything, the main areas I use are keeping blogs updated regularly and article marketing. Also backlinking using things like Angela's backlinking packet.

Like you said also a better SEO domain name would help, if he definitely wants his name as his domain is it worth perhaps having 2 sites, one with his name and one with a keyword rich name.

I would do the forum commenting too, although if you are doing it yourself it might depend on your knowledge of art (I don't think I'd be too good at commenting about art)

It might be an idea to build a list too, I don't know what his product is or if there is anything that you can whip up to use as a give away to build a list.

Just some ideas, I hope you do really well with it.
    Good luck

I've done art marketing and the thing that I have always found most challenging is balancing the integrity of the artist's product or vision with the necessary raw sales effort.

While some artists like Warhol or Damien Hirst are well known for their blurring of art and commerce, others recoil at anything that smacks of commercialization. Finding your client's comfort level in the marketing of his work will save you a lot of wasted effort.

Here's a highly regarded general art site that also has a blogroll:
linesandcolor (.com). Sorry, can't post the direct link.

Thanks Sheryl - I was wondering whether a subdomain (www dot wirebending dot artistsname dot com) would do the trick for SEO? There's lots of different opinions on that so not sure which way to go. I am in the process of doing the keyword research for a new domain however.

Find a site that will get other artists talking about your artist. They exchange links all the time. For example, deviant art.

I'm working on some new things. So, nothing to promote just yet.
