Single best thing to do to make your list more responsive

How responsive your list is is even more important than just the size. So what would be the single best thing to do to improve your responsiveness?

Adding value is imoportrant but it isnt somethinmg you can do quickly. It takes time. Maybe giving away some valuable freebies for a week would help. Maybe a video introducimg yourself to make it more personal:

    The single best thing you can do to improve responsiveness is - target the right people in the first place by making your offer clear and of obvious value and use to them.

    People always respond better when you've helped them than if you're just building a random list and selling them.

    Look at the Gurus - they're always launching big free information offers/videos to build a perception of value.

    Many people think building a list just means getting names on an email system.

    Not spamming them with pitch after pitch.... And giving away worthwhile things of value for a while to gain their trust before you pitch your products to your list. And the most important thing is to treat them like human beings, because these are real people your communicating with you cannot forget that!

    What everyone else said... but also include relationship building.

    Mainly bonding. The more they know you the more they have a connection with you. Video is one of the best ways to do this. If they don't feel like they know you then they won't pay attention to the rest.

    Sure delivering value is a must, but bored people still won't pay attention long enough to get the value, and won't buy from you.

    Adding value to their life is the single most important thing you can do, IMHO.

    Next would be to write in a way that helps them to identify with you, so they realize, hey, this guy is like me. He understands me/my problems. He could be a friend or a neighbor.

      Gary Vaynerchuk talks about this in his book 'Crush It!'. He's a master at relationship building, largely because he's unique and entertaining. Have a read of that for a quick masterclass.

      My other thought is similar to what Andy said, but includes an important element: consistency.

      I don't think you can show massive value and make your list response skyrocket overnight. It needs to be consistent over time.

      The one thing I would do is increase the amount of value. Not necessarily the amount of content, just make sure the content I do give is more valuable to the people I'm targeting.

      I would also try and build a list of buyers. Give them something valuable (for a small amount like the cost of shipping or whatever) to begin with. That way, you know they've bought from you before and will be likely to buy again.

      I'd rather have a list of 200 core buyers than 20,000 freebie-seekers.

    Giving away valuable content and/or products. Also giving special discounts on your products seems to work well.

    Another thing that could help:

    Look at your competitors' emails. Try and beat every email with value. Make one time offers better, bonuses bigger and more valuable free offers. I think this could be the key to more responsive subscirbers.

    Value Value Value--If you continue to add value and help people you will keep more people on your list and definitely have better responses.

    If you notice alot of the emails coming in are all about buy buy buy which really causes me to delete delete delete. If you want to sell something keep it at the end but first provide the value.

    You want to continue to add value and not only will it help you keep a better list it will also cause people to want to read your messages and keep reading.

    Can't but agree. The money is not in the list unless you foster a relationship with the people in the list. Remember they are "people" and they got on your list because you were providing what they were looking for. So provide some more of the same for free whether it be product or service.
    I agree that some people are often keen to get something that is showing a discount. Others don't care if you have a good relationship with them and have delivered quality goods or products before, they will continue to buy from you.

      The single best thing you can do to make your list more
      responsive is to...

      Segment your list by interest.

      This way, you get to send the right message to the right
      person.

      And it also avoids you sending the wrong message to the
      wrong person too.

      When you begin to send only relevant messages to subscribers
      then readership and response rates usually go up.

      Too many IMer's make the mistake of having one big list
      that they treat the same.

      How soon do you guys offer products to your list?

      I've just put my first product up on clickbank and have a site that promises a 3 part course including 3 MP3s which I send to them over the course of 6 days.

      Then I send them another unannounced 18 page booklet two days after that.

      Would it be ok to send an offer on day 10 in this case (the offer is basically the rest of the course which I've given them the first part of).

        The thing to bear in mind is that new subscribers to your
        list are often "hot" and very interested in the subject so
        give them soft offers from the get-go.

        E.g. an unobtrusive link to your Clickbank product.

        Include that from day one so subscribers who are interested
        in your products can buy when they want to buy.

        This way you get to segment your list into subscribers and
        buyers early on before some people cool off.

        Share good content and include fuller offers later on to
        your subscriber list.

            Some tips for building a responsive list for me would be

            1)Low End Product: After a user opt in redirect him to a sales page that has your low end $7 dollar product. Makes this product awesome and overdeliver. The $7 price point is perfect because it is the equivalent of a mcdonalds meal and if someone is not willing to spend $7 on you what makes you think they will spend $47? Also you will usually get a high conversion rate for this 5-8% depending on where the traffic is coming from. Now that you have over delivered on your $7 product you will have a list of eager buyers for your $47 or $97 dollar product.

            2) Use video: video stimulates more brain cells than just plain text and adds a personal touch to your messages. People will respond more and you will build more credibility and authority in your market.

            3) Create Discussion: Interaction is very important in your list and what better way than using a blog? Make a video or a post and tell users to click on your blog to see it and encourage them to comment. this forms a sense of community and adds crediblity and shows that you care abotu your market by answering their comments personally.

            4) Ask Questions: Send out an e mail asking your market what their biggest questions and frustrations are, once you get the results address the most common question in a video. This builds tons of community and shows your users that you listen and care for them.

            5) Personal Touch: This is very important. Too many marketers behave like drones and nobody stands out. Do not be a afriad to act like a friend to your market and send them photos of your vacation or something completely IM unrelated and ask them what they think. Simple dialogue like this goes a long way to strengthening your bond and making you come off like a genuine nice person instead of a pushy sales man.

    Hit them with the free with EVERY email that you sent out. People love free, and if you give them awesome free information then they will buy from you.

    If you really want to make your list RESPONSIVE, ask them to shoot you a simple question their way, and tackle these questions generally, like "David D" does. You may get a lot of emails of course, but you can also specify to your list what kinds of emails are warranted in the first place.

    That is the best FREE information.

    Every list building product I have ever got, teaches how to build your list. None of them ever went into much detail on how to follow up with the subscribers. I don't really understand how to keep their attention so that I can send them a few pitches, which is obviously the reason to build the list and make some money. Until I can figure that out, I will not be building any lists.
