      Hi Cindy,
Your article needs to be written around a keyword (keywords) relative to the product you are promoting.
Let's say you are an affiliate for Tiffany Lamps and you want to write articles to promote your landing page which will link to the Tiffany Lamp site.

The first thing I would do is go to https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal and type in Tiffany Lamps. A list of the keywords thaqt have been typed into Google Search will come up and you can choose from the list which keywords you want to promote. Choose 2 that are closely related and use these for your article. e.g. Say you choose "Tiffany lamps" and Tiffany Floor Lamps".

Now go to google.com, type in "Tiffany Lamps" and click on some of the websites that come up. Some sites may not have much useful info, but others will. You must be aware that you cannot copy verbatum the info you have read, but you can rewrite the info in your own words. Your first article will probably take a few hours to write, but as you keep writing articles they get easier and faster to do.

Also go to EzineArticles.com and register. Go to their search box and type in something like How To Write Articles. Lots of results will come up for you to read and you will learn a lot from them.
Hope this helps you get started.
      Kindly

Hey Cindy research by reading some articles that are similar to what you have to say and write them from your point of view, with a twist. If budget allows you could always hire someone to do them for you. I suggest writing a number of them first yourself so you could get some experience in the subject.

Okay, here's the honest answer nobody wants to give you.

If you know nothing about a subject, you CAN'T write about it.

How can you? Think about it. What would you write? It's like me trying to
      write about landscaping.

Crap, I don't even know what the word means, not really.

Okay, so what do you do?

If you want to write about the subject, you have to go LEARN about the
subject. And I'm not talking about reading a few articles. I'm talking about
      actually LEARNING about the subject.

      How?

Pick up a good book on it.
Go to the library and do some research.
Ask some experts in the field and write down what they tell you.
Go to authority sites on the subject and learn what you can from them.

At the end of all this...know how to actually SPEAK to somebody on the
      subject INTELLIGENTLY.

THEN, you can write about it.

We have WAY TOO MANY schlock authors on the Internet who don't know
crap about what they're writing about and it needs to stop.

Every subject I write about, I know about. Some from personal experience
and some from doing a lot of research and study.

      That's why I'm successful.

Take this post for what it's worth to you.

Cindy, if this is your start with article marketing, why make things difficult by trying to start writing about an unfamiliar subject.

Why not start by writing about a subject that you are passionate about or at least know something about? You'll start to get into the swing of writing articles and become familiar with submitting to the directories.

Then you can start doing research and learning about new subjects to write about.

        Steve...

        In other words...

Don't learn the tricks of article writing. Learn the subjects of article writing.

Sounds like good advice to me. Your posts are always worth while.

        All the best,

      Cindy,

Most of the advice you've received in this thread is valid and valuable.

      Research is the answer.

Ideally you'll want to look at "authority sites" when doing online research. The articles on article directories and Wikipedia run the gamut from excellent to very, very bad.

Depending on the niche or niches you're working in you should be able to find association or trade group sites that will provide factual information. Government sites, while not particularly exciting, are usually objective.

The deeper and more focused your research the better your article. Drill deeply into sites with "in url" searches to find often hidden goodies.

Always look for third party corroboration of any "fact" you use in an article.

Don't discount intuition and "gut feeling"; their foundation is experience.

    Like Steve said!

Also one way to quickly grab info on a topic you need to research is to setup an igoogle account and use google alerts, google reader, google news and even google videos - all setup for your keyword/topic.

It will aggregate lots of info for you to pull knowledge from.

      Hi Cindy

My first thought is - why do you want to start marketing in a subject you know nothing about?

Wouldn't it be better to start with something that either you know something about or are interested in.

What I would do is to start by writing down a list of topics you know something about and then a separate list of topics you are interested in.

Now, not knowing anything about you these suggestions may not apply but.... if you have a child/children then that's something you know about. Added to that you may also know about what to do when your child gets ill, potty training, temper tantrums etc.

You may know about a particular sport; tennis, golf etc or a hobby; postcard collecting, cross stitch, etc. Or a skill - DIY, car maintenance etc.

Once you have done this you can take the next step. Make a list of all the things you can do and a list of the things you need help with.

      Then make a plan.

You need to have some foundations to build on before getting to the point of article marketing.

There's lots of help in the forum from fellow warriors and on a vast amunt of topics - do a search on the forum for article marketing, making a plan etc.

      Good luck!

    Hi Cindy,

I ghostwrite expert articles all the time for clients who don't know how to write or have limited knowledge about the subject and wish to participate in article marketing. I start out with keywords, develop a title, description and headline, and I do research to familiarize myself with the topic at hand.

If you intend to write the articles yourself, start with something simple. Like if your topic is "organic gardening", start with an article entitled "What is organic gardening?" While you are doing the research for that article, you will come up with ideas and knowledge that can be used in other articles.

If you need to hire writer to write the articles, feel free to contact me. I love to write expert articles and gain knowledge that I will probably never use, but its fun!

    Hi Cindy

What are the other people in your niche using to drive traffic to their website?

I totally agree that if you're not confident in writing then you should be getting a professional into do it - but you could supply them with bullet points if you want to give it a personal touch.

It may be worth contact the experts in your niche and trying to arrange an interview. If you record this you could get it transcribed and turned into a report you could give away to build your list, or turn it a series of articles for your blog.

    Steps to take:

    1. Do research to learn at least some keys things about the subject. If you want to write articles with a "How to" slant, try ehow.com and about.com. If you want to do some review type articles, try epinions.com and consumerreports.org. For pure informational articles, wikipedia and Google.

    2. Build a keyword list. You want your articles to be built around phrases people actually search for at Google and other SE's. Find them at wordtracker.com or the Google Adwords Tool someone else linked to earlier. SEO Book also has one.

    3. Drill down your keyword list and write a couple articles about each phrase. You can use the resources I listed in #1 to get pretty much all you need to write good articles.

    4. Submit the articles to EzineArticles.com and here's a list of some other top directories you can submit them to:

    · SearchWarp - SearchWarp Writer's Community for Do It Yourself and Current Events Commentary
    · GoArticles - Article Search Engine Directory: GoArticles.com
    · Buzzle - http://buzzle.com
    · ISnare - http://isnare.com
    · IdeaMarketers - http://ideamarketers.com/
    · ArticleDashBoard - http://articledashboard.com
    · ArticleStars - http://articlestars.com
    · ArticleCity - http://articlecity.com
    · ArticleDepot - http://articledepot.co.uk

    Hope that helps.

    Cindy:

Both of my first two offline, hardcopy published books were on subjects that I knew nothing about -- at least until I decided to write about them. What mattered is that I was very interested in both subjects, so I educated myself about them and developed an outline. Then I fleshed out the outline and filled in the knowledge with additional research as necessary.

So yes, you can successfully write on a subject that you know nothing about, but you're probably not going to write well unless you spend time becoming familiar with the subject before you begin. And it really, really helps if you're very interested in the subject matter.

Think about high school or college: you probably produced some very good term papers on subjects that you weren't familiar with until you began to study the subject for your class. You did it because it was required of you, and you did the research necessary to produce a credible term paper. Apply the same approach to the subjects you want to write professionally about.

  • Lots of good advice here, but I do remember this, song writers write about what they know. And the songs become much better then.
    Yet selling can be different.
I'd do some research , write a solid article and remember those keywords you need.
