I don't think overtaking Amazon.com in the SERPs is as hard as some believe. Actually some get excited when they see that Amazon has the lead for their newly researched keywords, especially long tail phrases.
I believe the issue is Amazon is so large that they do not need to concentrate heavily on SEO either onsite or off. They let their affiliates handle this area I believe.
If you check their website for coding errors and validation you will often find over 1000 errors with many more warnings. This is one area that gives the smaller businesses a loophole. So basically everything that you normally do in SEO will work if you are doing it with vigor.
But just trying to go it via backlinks alone will never work as they have millions of them. So concentrating on quality and high end on-site optimization is a key area I believe.

    Good luck to you!

really, you don't think backlinks would matter most when it comes to this situation? Amazon may have millions of backlinks to the domain but not that that particular page?
let me know your thoughts on this...

Note that I said trying to gain ground by backlinks alone.
Of course you need backlinks but trying to out backlink them in numbers would be a hard thing to do in my case.
The pages I compete with them on have tons of backlinks yet I manage to out rank them quite often or seem to swap out SERPs with them back and forth on a regular basis.

If they have few bl to the page then dominating them shouldn't be too hard and a good backlinking strategy might be all that is needed.
But going for some of the broad terms takes a bit more work where their inattention to SEO details does hurt them and helps you.

I haven't tried to compete with them on specific products but I hear it isn't too hard to outpace them if the product isn't one of their main items.

    Hey,

I'm able to out rank them on a few products that I promote. I don't find it so hard to do so, good back links and on site SEO will get you there.

I'm not so sure, if being number one is such a great thing all the time. Shoppers, do shop, meaning, are they, ready to click over on the very first site they land on?

Once they leave your site an explore another, looking for the best deal, your just lost your cookie and sale.

I'm trying to find that perfect spot, dunno if #1 is always the best in some cases, that's just my opinion.

thanks for the feedback jim, Im glad you are able to outrank them...as for the #1 position well it has always been sought after and according to marketers it yields the highest income possibility.

I have never heard of Zappo.

Why are you trying to dominate these sites anyway?

srry it's actually zappos.com, they sell things like amazon does. I am trying to dominate these sites for a buyer keyword.

        Hey,

Yes, the number one spot is the goal, that we all strive for, that I, agree.

What I, have notice for me, is my mid-located listings in Google, seems to get more click overs then my #1 spot.

Yes, I get good traffic being #1, but I, seem to get better click overs having mid-listing. Is this the point, where the customer, have seen the same deal on products above me? Finally ready to order?

Just today I, made a sale and my spot, was on page two. Did this customers exhausted his/her search looking for the best deal. Finally saying, "hell Let me finally order this and be done with it."

Not sure If I, agree that "#1 position yields the highest income possibility" for amazon products.

i am going after an amazon ziche which i believe amazon only has 3 baclinks for. My site is ranked number 3 and is only 2 months old. I believe that the shopping results above the amazon result will get more clicks. Whats your opinions.

I think so too monitorit, because they have a picture of the item I am trying to rank for while everyone else just has the title. So I figure shoppers will probably click on the item picture. That's why videos that appear in the results get so many clicks...but if I dominate them to #1 position I would at least gain a better ground
