I'm suffering from a terrible malady at the moment..

And it's name is procrastination and idleness

I've sat here this morning trying to justify to myself why
  • I haven't written out to my list for over three weeks,
  • worked very much on any of my sites
  • Generally moved forwards with just about anything
Yeah I can say I've been really busy at the offline job (and I have)
I can also use the excuse we are in the middle of renovating a house (we are)

But when it really boils down to it maybe those hours I've sat on my ass recently, watching Law & Order on the telly could have been put to much more productive use!

I challenge anyone who claims to have no time to do their online stuff to actually check out how much time they waste on watching TV etc and see how much of it could be used much more productively

I've been toying with the idea of taking the camera to the beach to shoot a video for my list.

Of course, the key part is the beach.

    It's that time of year.

3 Weeks with no updates to your list?

That's nothing to be ashamed of. Trust me.

I don't write anything to any of my lists since January. Yep, that's 3 Months now.

The reason? A consulting project: good pay, too much work.

    Off to write some broadcasts!!!

It is so easy to fall into that trap or worse still delude yourself that you are busy when in fact all you are doing is reading forum posts, surfing and generally doing nothing in particular that is productive.

In reality you have been busy though and it is important to have some 'me time' or you will burn yourself out.

I try to make it a rule NEVER to go to bed on an evening without doing at least one productive thing relating to my IM business (even on my days off). It doesn't matter if it is just a 10 minute job....it all mounts up at the end of the week.

Anyway I can't wait to read your Law and Order blog......

      To be honest,

I think it's safe to say that we all suffer from the same "Malady" that you do. Internet Marketing is hard. It's taxing, mentally frustrating and it can be overbearing at times. Honestly, it's just like any other job. I was a Carpenter for a while and I remember getting off of work on Fridays knowing that I had a few days of rest ahead of me. Without having those days of rest, I wouldn't have been worth a damn.

My point being, we all need rest. Whether we're working our minds or bodies, we all need a little Law and Order in our lives

Hope this helped. You'll get back into the flow in a little while.

If I were you - I'd think about getting some really keen outsourcing people on the case - make sure that you give them work to do every day and you can relax.

I find that if I get one of my guys to write something, even if it's not good enough for sending out to a list etc, it gets me going and then I can polish it up in a couple of mins. Also - it's great that you just write out a to-do list and things 'get done'.

I used to run into the same problem...not Law and Order, but HBO. Anytime a good movie came on, I'd flip off the PC and watch. And then watch the previews until the next movie came on.

And then watch the next movie.

I solved the problem by giving away my TV to a friend to put in his kids bedroom. Now with no TV, I have no time killing excuse to take me away from doing what needs to be done.

Except for my wife, her list of honey-do's, the books I bought on sale at Barnes and Noble three weeks ago, the first days of spring, etc.

    Kim -

That "farm" thing is crazy - I have two friends who recently started it and they won't leave home sometimes because "My crops need....".

They are building virtual barns for virtual livestock and growing virtual crops which seem to take more care than a real garden. I think they've gone around the virtual bend myself....

They keep telling me "you need to do this" - no way. Not gonna happen. Listening to them talking about farmville reminds of children saying "make believe that...."

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

That's a smart move. I got hooked on the whole Farmville thing for awhile... I got to Level 18 or so then decided there were better things I could do with my time.

Procrastination is the devil... I feel like I'm going out of my mind if I don't get anything done, even if it's hard work to get started on something. When I make a checklist, though, and find myself crossing everything off one-by-one, I feel pretty damn good. I then reward myself in one way or another.

Kim, when I don't do stuff for my business (not often) it's because I want
to do something else and understand that I am sacrificing that time to do
      something else.

That way, I do it without guilt.

The last 2 days, I was in the recording studio cranking out 2 new tunes.

I wanted to do it and didn't care that I wasn't working on my business.

If you go about it in that way, you'll find that you work when you really
want to and don't work when you don't want to...as long as you explain to
yourself WHY you're doing what you're doing.

At least it works for me.

    Well written.

I can't relate to the TV stuff because I rarely watch TV. There used to be a time when I used to burn endless hours playing a game called Horizons of Istaria, then another called Everquest II. There was also another time when I would spend 20 - 30 hours in the field honing my pick up skills (I'm a part-time dating coach) and masterminding with other PUAs.

I don't think anybody, who's human, has not had moments of idleness or times when they were relaxing, enjoying a hobby, or just starting at the wall. We've all had those times. It's good to have a business plan too, however, there are times in life when one cannot or should not adhere to their plan. For example, last year was very challenging for me health-wise. There were days when I couldn't even get out of bed. It really made me appreciate my health and forced me to change the way I eat and exercise.

Then there are those that get stuck in a genuine "rut". They lose motivation or get distracted too easily. For those folks, they need to dig deeper from their goals and envision the why and then visualize what it would be like to attain those goals. If that still doesn't motivate them then I would say they don't have strong enough goals or don't have the focus and concentration levels to visualize strongly enough to elicit an emotive response.

I have plenty of time to do my online stuff now because I don't goof off as much anymore. I've also gotten to a point where I have people on my team to help do a lot of the stuff I don't like doing. Gosh damn I love this business.

    Cheers,

    RoD

I'm not going to go into how upset I was to find out my 3d glasses I took from the movie theater would not work on the 3d youtube videos that are out now.

I need to get the old fashioned blue/red glasses so I can see things coming out of my computer screen.

I will likely spend a day or two having to watch all of those videos.

Ok, off to see if ebay has some. Thanks for the reminder...

There seems to be one important question that no one in this thread is asking...

    Are you watching:
    --The regular Law and Order
-- Law and Order: SVU, or..
    --Law and Order: Criminal Intent?

    ***

Let me ask you another (more serious) question -- how do you feel when you get to your job?

I know you love it. You're right in there helping people. Are you pretty motivated about it?

Do you feel the same way about your IM stuff?

If not, possibly you need to branch out to a different niches or find a way to get in more of that "one-on-one" helping that you enjoy. For example -- maybe you'd be a good personal coach. Maybe it would make you feel more fulfilled and make you feel like you're really making a difference.

I bet if you felt that way, you'd get a little shot of motivation.

    Cheers,
    Becky

    Hi Kim!

Look girl, if you are addicted to Law & Order SVU--don't panic. All great online marketers are. It is a pre-requisite for membership into the "Should Be Workin' But I've Got To Know What Stabler and Bensen Are Up To club." (I'm president of that club Kim--I'll send you a membership badge!)

So I'm gunna give you a dose of what's good for you kid. It's something I give away with one of my products, but I just went back and redacted some parts and deleted some pages which referenced that product. It may seem like there are holes and gaps in what I talk about--that's because I've deleted pages.

Anyway, all you need are the last three pages anyway. Read those pages and see if it gets you off the couch and back to work. I've titled my gift to you Better Than Law And Order!

Seriously, if anyone wants it--swipe the dang thing. It might be of help to you.

In that case, carry on. SVU is a good show.

If you start feeling guilty about watching too many episodes, then just toss in a few regular Law and Order episodes or NCIS re-runs to make you feel better.
