Question about Paypal Subscriptions and Membership Site

Happy, happy Friday everybody,

Came across an unexpected problem this morning. I received a phone call from a prospect who had attempted to sign up at one of my subscription membership sites, but it wasn't letting him log in.

When I went and checked, it showed that he had subscribed, but the accounting system was showing his paypal transaction as 'uncleared'. I did not have any funds received in my Paypal account for that transaction.

When I contacted Paypal, they indicated that since this was a subscription product, they were required to use a Paypal account or create a new one. They suspected that the buyer needed to confirm their bank account before the transaction could be processed.

After further investigation, I noticed that I had quite a 'pile' of new subscriptions with 'uncleared' transactions just from this week.

I won't ask if there's a problem here; but what am I missing? Or what should I be doing differently here? Just from this week alone, I have a pretty nice pile of money that was left on the table.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

What paypal product are you using? The free version with IPNs?

Yes - that part of the process works correctly. I go in and do a live test transaction and it works perfectly. Money is withdrawn correctly from one account, and appears correctly in another account.

Whatever the issue is, it seems to be on the buyer's side of the transaction, between them and paypal.

Not just an issue for membership payments but for all Paypal payments.

If they do not have a verified cc on file then Paypal actually waits until the money is collected from their bank account before they credit your account. The person sending you the payment knows this as Paypal tells them both during the payment process and in the email that they send the customer after they make the payment.

Paypal is basically waiting for the check to clear before shipping out the product which makes sense if you think about it.
