Whew, thanks to DL Guard!

I received an email this morning:

Hello Administrator,

Could you please send me the download link again? Apparently, the email was in my junk folder. Tried the link but has expired.

My receipt no. is (removed)

which isn't unusual. So I went to DL Guard to give the download link another 24 hours. Imagine my surprise when I found out that several dozen people, all with different names and email addresses, had attempted to use that same receipt code beginning in January not long after the original purchaser had made the purchase.

None of them got the download, and I had no clue this was happening until this bright guy thought he could get the expiration date extended for himself.

I wonder how many other receipt codes have been passed around since I started selling, is there a way to tell?

Maybe you could do a search in Google for the actual order number?

It seems like DL Guard is definitely a good investment.

Good thought. I did a search just now and it didn't appear in Google

Then I had a shivering thought, which led to a more shivering revelation...

I did a search using Alexa, and sure enough, there it was, the link to the download page.

Can't Alexa be stopped from publishing links to supposedly secure content? I've recently become aware, through my logs, that pages I set up with special pricing (such as for subscribers who had a PayPal payment fail and I was letting them back in at their original price) were being found using Alexa, I had to move those pages to a different folder. Then after I gave out those links a couple times, all of a sudden they were indexed by Alexa as well, so I had to password protect those folders.

Sometimes being an IM'er isn't fun ... but most days I wouldn't trade it for anything.

DL Guard is awesome! It's on my list of "must have" scripts.

Since I've discovered the Alexa issue, I no longer protect my loss leader products with DL Guard. I include some promotional shortcuts in the zip file and hope they get distributed all over the place.

Yep!
This is surely another "We Love Sam" thread...

While DLGaurd cannot stop people from "sharing" your product (and no other software can).... it DOES protect you from the usual theft and/or stupid buyers sharing the download links with others!

  Kevin I think your hamster is in love with Sam. Latest broadcast on CNN showed them swimming on one of those famous beaches in the land of down under. Believe Hamster was nude or it may have been Sam. Just can't be sure.

  Well, I didn't start it out to be a Sam Stephen's groupie thread, I didn't even mention his name, just sort of wanted to know if there was an easy way to find out who was attempting to access the downloads and failing. And to mention the name of the fool that tried to get me to extend the link, in case anyone else has heard from him.

Thank you Dennis. I was wondering how long this new forum would go before we could start an "I LOVE SAM" thread.

Let's all gather around and speak of the wonder that is Sam Stevens and his marvelous DL Guard.

I myself not only use DL Guard to control all my products, get great service from Sam when it comes to techie stuff, but also am forever in Sam's debt that he makes me feel that my life has more purpose because I don't spend my days holed up on a soggy old sofa waiting for customers to call for tech support.

  DL Guard is wonderful. I use it as well even on free products. Some people get upset that I'm collecting their email address, but then again, I guess they don't need to have my free product to live do they?

  It always amazes me how marketer's hate being marketed to.
  
  My fave is a customer whingin and bitchin because I had an OTO on a product he bought.
  
  I wasn't capturing his email addy, I wasn't sending him to upsell hell. Just an extra page with his download link at the bottom lol and he moaned like hell.

I went into DL Guard admin panel, did a search for the receipt code, and up popped the list of all the download attempts, dates, times, names, email addresses, and how many downloads.

The original purchaser had downloaded 2 times, and the rest had no downloads.
