Create subdomains or new domains

I have an idea for a new site which I am about to launch. I also have several related ideas.

Should I put these on subdomains or on new domains?

If the search engines to see them as entirely seperate sites will I get more traffic than I would if they are all seen as seperate parts of one site.

ie. if someone is searching for red widgets, will red.widgets.com rate as highly as www.redwidgets.com?

I recently was asking a similar question, and then I did a bit more digging around.

Here's a few tips that should make subdomains more attractive.

You can create a mini network using a short and attractive domain name that revolves around a specific niche.

Let us say you want to build around sports, you can pick a domain like:

kingsports(dot)com and then branch out several different micro niches like

    soccer-challenge(dot)kingsports(dot)com or
    learntoplayhockey(dot)kingsports(dot)com

you can work on this concept untill you build enough traffic on your subdomains and then slowly direct some or all of that traffic to your main domain using 100% organic traffic.

In terms of SEO, subdomains will work great, as long as you stick to your main keyword but try get a domain name that is as short as possible and possibly related.

You can also deviate from this, say you find a cool domain name available like: extremeliving(dot)com or something else that sounds like it has a bit of an edge.

All in all, not a bad practice and there are many blogger pages that get a lot of hits even though they are subdomains by default.

    Hope this helped.

If all other things were equal? I'd suspect the redwidgets domain would outrank the red.widgets subdomain. This is not based upon tested fact, but just upon observing while I'm searching.

Now, if you changed the equation, and red.widgets has more quality backlinks, better optimized content, etc... You just flipped the winner.

The better question to me, does redwigets.widgets rank higher, or does red.widgets. I'm betting on the first one.

Great advice. From reading this the consensus seems to be to keep them together if they are related.

In the end I went for different domains as I'm going to be attacking some nice long tail niches, with specific words in the domain name.

I don't think it makes any difference if they are related or not unless you are linking between them it shouldn't make any difference. That's not a fact, just my opinion. Seems to work okay for Blogger, Wordpress, Typepad, About, etc ...

    In my case,

If the product or site i'm creating and promoting is gonna be something big then I give it a separate domain name but if it's just a squeeze page that i'll be linking from my main blog or site then I just give it a sub domain.

Good strategy! This is exactly what everyone should do. Why create a new domain for a squeeze page. Use a subdomain and people can see the association with the main subject page.

I'm not sure what value this will have for you, but one of my sites is a general-interest site covering a lot of topics of interest to a particular market segment. I don't use subdomains, and the top level domain is generic enough to be anything.

The general topic areas are the categories, and the article names are where I focus on the actual keyword. For example,

        example.com/home-electronics/plasma-tv-options.html

The home page gets very little search traffic, the categories get a few hundred visitors per month, and the traffic to the individual articles varies depending on the keyword, competition, etc. The articles are found for a dizzying array of longtail terms.

Take what you will from this...

Do you use PLRs, or is this all original content? Just curious as I'm thinking of starting a PLR site but dont know if its worth it. I'm very lazy...

This particlular site is a mixture of my own original content, articles submitted via Unique Article Writer, articles syndicated from EZA and rewritten PLR. Combined total, around 324 articles at last count.

The best in terms of drawing search traffic have been the original articles and the higher quality syndicated articles. The quality on a lot of the UAW articles left a lot to be desired, so I've stopped using them and am gradually weeding out the crud and keeping the rest.

If I had it to do over, I'd use more categories for better theming in the sub-directories.
