A few newbie questions. Advice?

I set up a site for my son through WordPress direct about two years ago when I was doing Ed Dale's 30 day challenge. I recently checked the site analytics and it is getting an average of 100 hits per day. I haven't touched it in almost a year. I am not making any money from it and since I still don't know much other than how I got the site up, I really don't know how to monetize the site and to "take care of it", so to speak.

Also is there a way to move a site from wordpress direct to the regular wordpress platform (I think thats what you call it) within my hosting (hostgator) so that I can add different things to it. Or will this change its ratings and traffic?

I am completely lost here. I am looking to set up other sites as well but have no html or wordpress knowledge. I am just learning this stuff.

You might want to consider getting some help, but the short answer is that if you keep your domain name the same you shouldn't have any major issues. Also, you want to keep the URLs of the pages the sae.

There are several ways to monetize it... One of the most popular is Google adsense. They are the best PPC out there, but there are others such as YPN, Bidvertiser, AdBrite and so-on.

There are just so many ways to monetize a site that you are going to have to use the process of elimination and some trial and error to figure out which one works best for you.

As far as moving from wordpress to the wordpress platform, you got me there. What exaclty are you trying to do?

Do you mean the site is currently set up on the free wordpress site (WordPress.com — Get a Free Blog Here) and you're looking to move the content to your own domain name?

You don't have to do anything to move a site from wordpress direct to your own host.

WP direct sets it up on your own host in the first place, and you can always go to http://yoursite.com/wp-admin and make whatever changes you want (though keep in mind that certain changes you make may cause your blog not to work properly with WP direct anymore).

Exactly. You can just stop using the WP Direct interface at any time and log directly into your WP Admin.

As for monetizing, it really depends on the niche. You may be able to promote Amazon products, ebay, Adsense, clickbank products, CPA offers, Commission Junction has a zillion affiliate promos you can run.

You can always look for independant affiliate programs too. For example, if your site was about Drums, you could search "drums+affiliate" and see what you find. Or see if there is a product on Amazon or somewhere that targets a particular popular drum manufacturer, etc.

I'm not even sure what Wordpress Direct even does for you. I know its a product from another marketer, and I *think* it just makes setting up PPC campaigns using WP a little quicker/easier.

You should simply log in to Wordpress, create more posts/content, throw a banner for a product in your niche in the sidebar, add affiliate links in your posts to products that naturally relate, add Adsense, etc...
