Yes you could but what I like to do is find a secondary popular keyword that relates to your niche and add the word before or after the domain.

Example"

The keyphrase that you wanted is taken is "NY houses for rent"

and you might see that "best NY houses" is another popular searched phrase

Instead of using a hyphen id register bestnyhousesforrent.com which would target BOTH keyphrases...

Agreed with Ernie, if you can add more "umph" to the domain, do it that way. I would try to keep it as short as possible when doing so. In other words, if you made it:

amazinglystunningbestnyhousesforrent.com that may be a bit much. Seems better to do two or more domains on that one like:
bestnyhousesforrent.com and amazingnyhousesforrent.com with each targeting their respective phrases directly.

This has been discussed on the forum many times, with lots of good responses, but they gel out to be (basically)

1 - keep it short
2 - use as few dashes as possible, but some are ok (if it looks spammy, probably too much)
3 - keep it relevant if possible like Ernie suggests
4 - using .net, .org etc is ok if the .com is taken - that said, consider finding a .com that adds to the end with another term or short generic phrase

Here's what I mean by #4:

Let's say that
PinkBoaWearingPurpleDinosaur.com is taken

PinkBoaWearingPurpleDinosaur.net (or .org) would be OK in general, but

PinkBoaWearingPurpleDinosaurInfo.com might be better

IMHO, .com's are the only way to go if the domain is for a business (like an offline biz or online too, not just affiliate or landing pages). If you're pushing affiliate stuff/adsense, etc. from it, the others are ok, but if potential customers of your products/services will be hitting the site, it's .com all the way.

Right on - if you match too closely, then certainly your traffic will be siphoned off as it's habit for people to type .com - I see countless emails going to people that have an sbcglobal (now ATT) email - they use the format:

Yeah, squatters are everywhere. If it's at all possible these folks (again, IMHO) should try to find something similar. If they get too close or the exact same thing with a .net, people will be going to the parked page or to nowhere (if they aren't using it) and then we have an issue. Hence my thoughts at the end of the post for business to stick with .com any time they possibly can - if it's an adsense or review site, not a big deal.

BTW - if there's a squatter on companyx13abc.com then companyx13abc may have a legal right to get that domain, especially if they have their business name trademarked.

It's more like somebody in Chicago has rayspizza.com so somebody who has a restaurant by the same name in Miami might buy rayspizza.net. Some people insist on having the exact name and not rayspizzamiami.com.

One example is that I have a .com steakhouse restaurant domain that I use to for an eBay EPN affiliate site. There are 5 local restaurants with that same name scattered across the US. You would have thought they would have at least asked if I was willing to sell at a good price (I was) but they ended up either buying a .net or .biz or using the name plus city.

It doesn't matter if it's a com, org, info. At least for search engines. Maybe for 0.00001% of your clients will matter. As for - in domain names, for cheap sniper sites aimed at getting on first page with low work it matters a little, better without - but if the domain name is not available without - take the hyphen version, it's not big deal.

I only like hyphenated domains if the word or word's have a hyphen in them naturally, such as self-esteem.com, otherwise I would avoid using them.

Why?

1. Minimal type-in traffic
2. You will lose traffic to the unhyphenated domain
3. They aren't easy for customers to remember
4. It looks unprofessional

As for domain extensions, .com is king in the USA. If that's the market you're looking to grow your business in try to only use that extension. .Net/.Org is good only if the dot com isn't developed (or else you will lose traffic in most cases). As for the other unpopular global extensions(.info/.biz/.ws/etc.) I would avoid them. If you're looking to grow your market in a certain country, and they allow non-resident's to purchase a domain in their country code(cctld), choose that country's extension you wish to dominate. .US for example is a viable alternative to .com and works great for american based companies/businesses.

Instead of DogTraining-Today.com I would personally choose a similar word without having to use a hyphen, such as Weekly, Monthly, Daily, etc. until you find a unhyphenated .com available. Estibot.com has a great domain idea tool that's free to use, to make it easier for you to find an available domain. Link: www.estibot.com/longtail.php

I disagree on hyphenated domains. I've got several two word domains (e.g. www.one-two.com, not an actual domain but you get the picture) with a hyphen in the middle that rank very well. Even better than the two word domain with no hyphen.

I think you're misunderstanding the point. Nobody is saying hyphenated domains can't rank well. Many do. But everything else being equal, it has been my experience that Google will choose to rank the non-hyphenated version above the hyphenated one. Again -- that's assuming everything else is equal. Same content, same traffic, same backlink power, etc.

Remember, customers who visit your website is Human Being, a website with .com always seem more professional to human being (compared to .info etc)

Yep, hypens dont make a difference. But always go for .com domains, they are tier1 and best for SEO rankings ... although some would argue that .org also works very well.
