Strategies for a Google-Friendly homepage?

I have a site up with alot of good unique content, a well targeted domain name that corresponds to my main keyword and some good backlinks.

The only weakness is a poor front page.

If my keyword is, lets say for example, "locksmith manhattan"

Do I drop this keyword into every paragraph of text on my front page or is there a more sublte approach?

You can try mentioning your targeted keyword once every 100-200 words. It's more subtle and it doesn't come off as spammy to Googlebot.

Anyway, here are some questions that may help you:

What is the current position of your website in Google?

Are you using your targeted keyword as your anchor text?

Is the competition for your keyword strong?

How many backlinks do you have?

    How optimized is your website?

How optimized is your competitor's website?

competition for keyword is quite high, some of my competitors have alot more backlinks than me e.g. one has almost 60 backlinks. BUT none of their sites could be described as excellent or very good for SEO purposes.

My domain name is the keyword .

It is currenly number 8 in Google.

I have around 35 backlinks - could be better I know.

Keyword is in achor text but there are 4 words ahead of it.
      For example,

"ABCD fast locksmith service, locksmith manhattan, expert and reliable"
