All themes are customizable from within Wordpress, it just depends on your level of capability with PHP & CSS

Although, for Newbies it is often easier to customise themes that come with their own settings panel

Watch out the footers are coded so you don't know what is in there. Didn't check the other files but they might have hidden code in them as well

  I wouldn't use these. The footer.php is coded. On the one theme I checked there is 4 different links. One going to a chatroom site, next to toaster site, next to microwave site and the last one to a site something to do with mobile phones.
  
  The link is also there going to the theme site which is fine but the other ones is not good. I have replaced the footer but then the site crash. I have also tried to decode but can't seem to decode.
  
  Like I said I don't mind a link back to the theme supplier but having these other link is a bit shady.

Almost all free themes have these links back to other sites. It's a link building strategy.
The free themes go viral and creates massive backlinking.

I don't object to a link back to the coder of the theme but to chatrooms etc. that is not on.

Well don't use the themes for SEO purposes then.

You can't post a decoding tool here on the forum and let people rob the author of the link juice.

He releases these themes with the terms that the links stay in tact.

There are thousands of free premium themes that link out to God knows what...the same as these themes. Those are the terms.

I understand your concerns, but please stay within the rules the author lays out.

The difference is it is shady link juice and people should be warned of that. The site don't warn you of that and another thing I found is that there seems to be adsense coded in as well as I cannot find where you can change the code.

As for these guys playing the rules and terms is not true as nowhere do they inform you that these links are hidden and I don't think anybody would use a theme and supply 4 "shady" backlinks back to the supplier. There is also no license file with the theme.

A basecode 64 decoder is well know and not shady in anyway.

For me the bottom line is as a warrior I need to warn my fellow warriors of shady things and the OP was not aware of this and many people get cough this way.

Oww.. Didn't see that. The theme doesn't come with a license. And a warrior told me that when you put a theme on Wordpress it becomes GPL. So, can't we just remove the links?

  I haven uploaded the theme but just looking at a few files and it lookss clean. I looks like a nice theme as well. The coder ask to leave the backlink back to CSSJockey so if you honor that it is fine.

No, they don't. None of them on the WP site - they don't allow it.

The main problem is not the presence of links, although some would argue even that.
The main problem is that the links are encrypted/encoded + the functions.php will break the theme (has the code for that) if you touch any of the encrypted files.

Furthermore, I hate it when there is no mentioning about this "linkbuilding strategy" on the download page... and you learn about it only after installing the theme.

So, are you going to give me 3 backlinks because I gave you free education here?

Well author of the revolution themes coded his footer links as well. He didn't link to weird sites, but still it's there. He never mentioned it either.

I don't think it's "shady" to create viral content to build backlinks to a website, no matter what the site is.

Warning warriors that it links out to IRRELEVANT sites is fine (they can then decide for themselves.)

but...

Giving them the tools to alter the authors content is wrong.

Any warrior worth his/her salt will agree on that.

Ok so you trying to prove a point (not sure what it is) The first themes is shady. The one you talking about is not and you will find that the shady guys themes don't even belong to him. I did mention leave the guys link in there but adding chatroom links to themes and not warning people that is going to use them is bad news

So sorry for adding the link to decode the "shady code"

Or let me change it to. If you decode the footer file using that decoder you will see that the themes have shady links in them

Thanks for the info you've provided. Can you tell me what you are looking for in the footer.php file that indicates there may be hidden links?

I only have a basic knowledge of php and WP structure so trying to understand what you do when you download a theme to check if there are any extras.
